An Assistant Pastor of the Christian Pentecostal Mission has been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in Owerri, Imo State.
The deceased cleric, whose name was given as Pastor Emma Okpara, was an assistant pastor in the Nnewi branch of the CPM in the neighbouring Anambra until his death in Owerri.
Witnesses said Okpara was shot by two gunmen in front of the Camp David Hostel which hosts off campus students of the Imo State University at the lonely and dillapidated Okwu Uratta Road in Oweri North Local Government Area of the State.
Our correspondent gathered that the two gunmen on a commercial motorcycle had trailed the CPM pastor to the lonely area and shot him when he resisted their attempt to snatch the bag he was carrying.
An assistant pastor at the headquarters of the CMP, Enugu located at Uratta, Owerri, Pastor John Ezike, confirmed the development to journalists in Owerri on Monday.
Ezike stated that Okpara did not die immediately from the gunshot injuries he received from his assailants as he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre by some concerned students where doctors confirmed him dead a few minutes after his arrival.
He stated that the dead pastor was in Owerri from his Nnewi base in Anambra State to attend the monthly meeting of the CPM when he met his death.
When our correspondent contacted the Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the Imo State Police Command, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, on Monday, he said that he was not aware of the development and promised to speak with our correspondent on the issue later.
He stated that he could not make any comment on the issue as the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Owerri North had been transfered recently.
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Imo State University have said that the killing of the pastor did not take place at the institution.
