An 18-year-old boy, Akinpelu Kehinde, has emerged the winner of the fifth edition of the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for secondary school pupils across the country.
The competition was introduced as part of activities to mark the birthday of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, and as a way of improving the standard of education in the country through exposure of pupils to issues that are significant to nation building.
Akinpelu was announced the winner after scoring 70 per cent in a keenly contested competition among the best 18 finalists that participated in the exercise, supervised by a senior lecturer in the Department of English, University of Lagos, and the Group Manager, Operations, TREM, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Uteh.
According to a release signed by Uteh after the competition, Akinpelu, from Alimosho Senior Secondary School, Lagos, would receive a desktop computer and a printer worth N140, 000 for his school, while he would smile home with a cash prize of N75,000.
Uteh added that Temiloluwa Wright of Baptist Academy, Lagos, who scored 67.5 per cent to nick the second position would receive a desktop computer worth N75,000 for his school.
Wright, she added, would be given N50,000 cash prize for his efforts, while Uzoma Chuwudi of Dority International Secondary School, Aba, Abia State, who came third, would receive books worth N40,000 for his school and a personal cash gift of N25,000.
Uteh, however, added that the prizes would be presented to the winners during the ninth Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture on September 4 in Lagos.
