HOW IMPORTANT ARE OLYMPIC MEDALS TO NIGERIA ?

How important are Olympic medals to Nigeria?

China is currently top of the medals table at the Beijing Olympics with 43 gold medals. The USA has the highest number of medals overall, with 79 medals in total. Why are some countries more successful at the Olympics?

Smaller countries have done well in the medals stakes. The UK is in 3rd place with 16 gold medals. Jamaica has excelled in track events with their athletes winning the gold in both the men's and women's 100 metres.

Developing nations have also found Olympic success. Ethiopian athletes took both gold medals for the 10000m.

In comparison to China, another nation emerging as a world power, India, does not seem to place such importance on Olympic sports. India only has one medal - Abhinav Bindra took the gold in the men?s ?10-metre air rifle event.

Why are some countries more concerned with Olympic success than others? How much investment in sport is there in Nigeria? Why do some nations excel at specific sports? How are sports people viewed in different countries?
