The Nigerian Men Handball National team started their campaign in this year?s Africa Nations Cup in defeat as the team was beaten 29-16 by the Angolans at Le Palais des Sports de Libreville, Libreville, Gabon.
The Nigerian team was on the back foot throughout the game and had little answer to the dominant Angolan team. The first half ended 13-5 in favour of the Angolans who made use of most of the scoring chances that came their way.
The Angola team was not ready to allow the Nigerians back in the game in the second half and it piled more pressure on their opponent. The Nigerian players showed a better understanding of the game in the second stanza, but the Angolans still finished tops 16-11 for a cumulative score of 29-16.
In the other game played in the group, defending champions, Egypt beat Morocco 33-28, but the Angolans lead the group with a superior goal difference of +13, while Egypt occupies the second spot with a goal difference of +5.
The fifth team in the group, Congo DR will taste action on Thursday when it takes on Angola and currently occupies the third position, Morocco is fourth, while Nigeria occupies the last position.
In Group A, Algeria defeated Cameroun 31-23 to set the pace, while other teams will also do play as battle for quarter final places hots up.
The Nigerian team will take on Egypt today in another Group B tie.
Apart from the top prize at the championship, the three best teams will automatically qualify for the World Cup in Denmark and Germany.
