No fewer than five people were reportedly killed by some armed robbers in Ogbagi Akoko in the Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State following a robbery attack on a branch of Skye Bank Plc. in the town on Tuesday.
The robbers were alleged to have carted away unspecified amount of money after a successful operation.
Among the deceased were the security man attached to the bank, a policeman, a blind septuagenarian and two other people.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the hoodlums blew up the door of the bank with a substance suspected to be dynamite before they gained entrance into the bank.
The eyewitness said the robbers shot repeatedly into the air after the operation, creating panic and making residents run helter-skelter for safety.
It was also gathered that some of the residents of the town were injured as they were hit by stray bullets.
It was gathered that the men of the Nigerian Army arrived at the scene some minutes after the robbers had finished the operation and left.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said he had information that three people died.
He said the robbers were 15 in number, adding that they came on motorcycles to carry out the attack.
He said, ?One Adebayo Onipona, a blind 73-year-old man; and one David Joseph, the security of the bank, were killed. We also lost a police sergeant, Abubakar Umar. We are on the trail of the robbers and we will get them.?
The PPRO appealed to the residents of the state to supply the command with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the hoodlums.
He said the corpse of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.
A Community leader in the town, Chief Eli Olorunsola, called on the government to be proactive on the security of the people of the area.
