The Deputy Managing Director, Africa Reinsurance Corporation, Ken Aghoghovbia, has said the firm will commence an awareness campaign to increase insurance consciousness among the people in the country.
He said this during a press briefing in Lagos.
?Africa Re has decided to invest in creating awareness about insurance because we realise that there is dearth of knowledge among the general populace,? he said.
He said that this was in spite of the fact that as a reinsurance company, it could only deal with insurers and reinsurers and not with the individual beneficiaries of insurance policies.
The deputy managing director said the ultimate aim was to deepen the knowledge about insurance and its advantages.
He said the campaign aimed at developing an integrated behavioural change to enhance the effort made by the National Insurance Commission and the Nigerian Insurers Association to bridge the knowledge, experience and perception gaps in the Nigerian insurance market.
According to him, the campaign aims to correct the negative and prevalent perceptions plaguing the industry as well as drive penetration and density and grow insurance culture across the country.
The deputy managing director said the company would enlighten the public on credible insurance partners such as how to get and enjoy the benefits of insurance in Nigeria.
Established by members? states of the African Union at the initiative of the African Development Bank Group in 1976, Karekezi said Africa Re is a Pan-African financial institution with predominantly African shareholders.
Its shareholdings, according to him, include 41 African states, the AfDB and 111 African and reinsurance companies from the 41 member countries.
Aghoghovbia said the corporation has its headquarters in Lagos with a network of eight regional offices across Africa including two subsidiaries in Johannesburg and Cairo.
?The corporation is thus well positioned to guarantee that insurers will fulfil their roles in African market,? he said.
