Prince,
I hope you are loving it now. Else, your wife will need to buy you a talking calculatior.

Adewale,
it surprises me why they hate it. I wish I could get more clue.

They are no more illiterate if they can count up to hundred. Education mean education not schooling. Once you know something, you are educated.

I c Mathematics as an indispensible aspect of life.  The knowledge of mathematics makes me feel special and gifted.

My love 4 mathematics began at my SS 1 class.  we had this brilliant maths teacher who de-mystified mathematics and made most of the

class a maths lover.

Now i love mathematics with passion.

MATHEMATICS is indeed a delightful and interesting subject, when handled by the right teacher. right from secondary school, i always look forward to solving maths problem and down to UNiversity, handling ordinary differential equation(ODE) was a pleasure. but suffice me to say that all this was achieved,cos i was tutored by the right teacher. so the personality of a teacher will always av a role to play in the development of a student in a particular subject.

I can't believe there has been a thread devoted to math and I didn't see it!!!  And shame on those of you know my math passion (obsession) and not tell me!!!

Math/Numbers and I are very close friends.  I love manipulating them and discovering new formulas with them.  If all of life were an algebraic equation I would be in heaven - so I have set myself out to discovering ways to find formulas for everything LOL!  I will say though Calculus and I DON'T get along AT ALL I think it has something to do with limits and my not liking those :).  I will say I do believe that mathematical ability can be genetic, BUT it can also be learned.  My grandfather was a brilliant mathematician and scientist (God rest his soul).  It's funny though I only knew him as "grandpa", it wasn't until after his death that I found out about his "other life".  He was one of the scientest on the Manhatten project, he helped develop something or another that helped get the first rocket to the moon.  My dad could have gone the same route as my grandfather as he is spectacular with numbers, computations and logic, but decided he liked art better.  My brother and sister aren't so much into math, but my brother is a sound engineer so does use math and my sister teaches science.  Two of my boys are excellent in math abilities but do not apply themselves at all.  I am hoping my daughter has my mathematical abilities.

Funny thing is I don't need to encourage them - they are so like me, I find equations written in each of their writing all over the place, they are always figuring something!!  And I know if they are doing it on paper they are doing 10 times more in their heads.  One thing they detest about math homework is having to show how they came to an answer because most times they just do it their head and think it's just stupid to write it down LOL!  My daughter counts everything when we are driving down the road - cars going by use, telephone poles, sometimes even trees.
