POLITICS / $480m AFC fund: CNPP calls for judicial panel of inquiry
« on: April 28, 2008, 12:28:45 PM »
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties on Sunday called on President Umaru Yar?Adua to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to look into how Nigeria invested the sum of $480m in the African Finance Corporation.
The CNPP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja, said the convocation of the panel was necessary because the investment violated the Nigerian constitution, adding that the panel of inquiry set up by the government on the issue was aimed at giving those behind the scam a soft landing.

It said, ?The convocation of Judicial Panel of Inquiry is imperative as in our considered view the investment was dubious on three grounds; it is unconstitutional, as it violates Sections 16{1} {b}, {2} {c} and 80{2} and it is also a misplacement of priorities.?

It also alleged that the fund was meant to settle those it called ?3rd term cronies.?

?For the avoidance of doubt Section 16 stipulates that our economy shall be controlled in such manner to serve the maximum welfare of the people and that the economic system is not operated in such a manner as to permit the control of wealth or the means of production and exchange by a few individuals or a group.

?The investment accordingly was meant to feather the nest of the mega billionaires the maximum ruler was carefully building to sustain his rule forever. Otherwise with such investment of $480m in education, the crisis in the sector could have been halted and no Nigerian shamelessly will be sending children to study in Ghana .?

Meanwhile, the CNPP has said that it does not subscribe to the government of national unity that was earlier proposed by the President Umaru Yar?Adua-led administration.

The conference said it believed that since the current administration was not duly elected, it was wrong for it to have proposed the formation of a government of national unity.

Speaking in Uyo during the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the CNPP on Saturday, the Secretary-General of the conference, Chief Willy Ezugwu noted that the move to form a government of national unity was targeted at making Nigeria a one-party state.
