ROCHESTER, N. Y.  (WHEC) — Flu is hitting Monroe County at a high level, according to the county health department.

As of Dec.  21, 420 cases of influenza have been reported, with 51 requiring hospitalizations.  Health officials say reported new cases more than doubled from the prior week.

Flu typically begins to show up in October and can last through May, often peaking in January or February.

“While we are well into flu season, it is circulating at a very high level at this time, so Monroe County residents should be particularly cautious now," Monroe County Health Commissioner Dr.  Michael Mendoza said.  "Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, stay home from work or school if you are sick, and be sure to cover your cough to prevent spreading germs to family and friends. "

UR Medicine Restrictions Begin Due to Flu
Monday, December 30, 2019
As our community, like much of the country, grapples with high levels of flu activity, UR Medicine is taking the following measures to limit its spread and best protect patients and staff at Strong Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and Wilmot Cancer Center:
No visitors under the age of 14 are permitted in the hospital.
No more than three people with a patient at a time.
People who are ill with flu-like symptoms (e. g. , fever, cough, sore throat, body aches) are asked not to visit hospitalized patients at all.
“Flu is sometimes a serious illness in someone who’s healthy, but it can be especially dangerous for hospitalized patients with underlying illnesses,” said Paul Graman, M. D. , Hospital Epidemiologist and Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Division at Strong.  “We strongly encourage people to wash their hands often, get their flu shots, and to contact their doctor if they feel ill. ”
These precautionary measures will go into effect at 8 a. m.  Tuesday, Dec.  31.
Family members who have questions about visiting their loved one at these UR Medicine hospitals should speak with the patient’s nurse or call Strong Memorial Hospital’s Infection Prevention office at (585) 275-7716.

Coronavirus may have lain dormant across the world and emerged when the environmental conditions were right for it to thrive rather than starting in China, an Oxford University expert believes.

Dr Tom Jefferson, senior associate tutor at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM), at Oxford and a visiting professor at Newcastle University,  argues there is growing evidence that the virus was elsewhere before it emerged in Asia.

Last week, Spanish virologists announced that they had found traces of the disease in samples of waste water collected in March 2019, nine months before coronavirus was seen in China.

Italian scientists have also found evidence of coronavirus in sewage samples in Milan and Turin in mid-December, many weeks before the first case was detected, while experts have found evidence of traces in Brazil in November.

Death toll from vaping lung disease rises to at least 11 as Georgia and Florida report fatalities from the rare form of pneumonia that has left officials struggling to identify the cause
Death toll from vaping lung disease rises to at least 11 as Georgia and Florida report fatalities from the rare form of pneumonia that has left officials struggling to identify the cause
The Centers for Disease Control is currently investigating 530 reported cases of severe lung illness related to vaping as of Thursday.
The agency said that it still does not know what in e-cigarettes is causing the health problems, but that the cases have occurred in people using nicotine-based e-cigarettes and THC e-cigarettes.
While the Georgia patient had a history of heavy e-cigarette use, doctors said the patient didn't vape THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
No information regarding the individual who died in Florida has been made available by the Florida Department of Health.
Out of the 530 cases, the CDC has analyzed 373 and determined that that two-thirds of people with severe lung illnesses, or 67 percent are 18 to 34 years old, and 16 percent are under 18.   The majority, 72 percent, are male.
The CDC said symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.  These worsen over time.

Scientists at the NIH began developing the first vaccine candidate on January 11th — think of that — within hours of the virus’s genetic code being posted online.   So, January 11th.   Most people never even heard what was going on January 11th.   And we were out there trying to develop a vaccine, not even knowing what we were up against.
