The Trump Administration is going to add several African countries to the travel ban that they have. This includes the tech hub known as Nigeria. Politico have reported that the White House is considering adding Sudan, Nigeria, Eritrea and even Tanzania to the list as well. This would actually coincide with the three-year anniversary of the original executive order. This is going to target the majority of Muslim nations.
Out of all of the possible positions that could be the most problematic to the US relations it would seem like Nigeria is the main one. The country of over 200 million people have become a magnet for things like VC and it’s also a very strategic entry point for Silicon Valley in general.  So why are Africa and Nigeria being targeted? Is this going to affect the entertainment industry? The truth is that it probably won’t for the most part. The online casino NetBet for example, is based entirely online and it’s also not reliant on the same things that other tech companies are.

So why Africa?
This really is the million-dollar question. The Department of State has not commented on the request to confirm the travel ban to other African countries. They have opened an enquiry however and this is going to deal with all kinds of African affairs. The Trump Administration issued the very first travel ban all the way back in 2017 and this was challenged, amended and even upheld by the Supreme Court.

The Current Form
When you look at the current form, you will soon see that the ban essentially puts a restriction on the citizens of North Korea, Yemen and even Libya as well. They are all mainly Muslim countries. The main reason why the ban has come through is because they have a high terrorist presence and they also have a deficient screening process when it comes to immigration as well. There has been no comment so far from the Trump administration and it’s a shame that nobody knows the motivation either.

Previously Named Countries
With the countries that have been named previously, it looks like there were issues with the Nigerian visa and people overstaying in the US. That being said, Nigeria does have somewhat of a terrorist problem in the northeast but no incident that has ever happened has hit the US soil. Peter Beinart who writes for The Atlantic has stated that African immigrants might have to be next when you look at the US restricting entry. For a number of years now, Trump has tried to discriminate against Latinos and Muslims, and this travel ban looks like he’s going to try and add a new target to that list. It looks like he is now targeting Africans, and this is going to be done right in time for the 2020 elections.
This could end up impacting the Nigerian tech industry, but it is unlikely. After all, it’s stable and progressing all the time, and isn’t overly reliant on anything from the US.

INTERNET / CES 2020: 6 Incredible Coolest Products Showcased so Far
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:08:08 PM »
CES 2020 is currently ongoing and tech giants are busy showcasing crazy innovative products that will change the face of technology.

So many interesting products have been showcased at the ongoing event, but we’ve selected few announced at the events.

Lenovo: World First Foldable Laptop

Lenovo unveiled the world’s first foldable laptop (with a foldable display) at CES 2020 and it is not a concept anymore.  Its name is ThinkPad X1 Fold and it will be available to purchase this year.

The laptop is equipped with a Plastic OLED display boasting a 4:3 aspect ratio, a 13. 3-inch diagonal and a 2K resolution.  The laptop weighs just 999 grams but it includes a good 55 Wh battery lasting 11 hours on a single charge, according to Lenovo.

It is fueled by a next gen Intel Core CPU paired with 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 1 TB of internal storage (SSD), it includes a SIM card slot and two USB Type-C ports.  The laptop may include a 5G modem.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite

Samsung showcased its new Galaxy Note 10 Lite and S10 Lite at CES 2020.  The two devices which will hit the shelves in Q1 2020 are the first Lite variants of Samsung’s flagship lineups.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite is the first “affordable” Note device and it provides all the innovative and unique features of the S Pen for a listing price of just €599.

Samsung Neon

Samsung NEON is not a hardware product but it is a new technology.  It is a technology able to give a body and a face to chatbots.  It creates avatars able to interact with real people for a series of tasks to be accomplished.

The software managing the avatars is able to generate new expressions, movements, and dialogues in real time, automatically, in just a few milliseconds.  This will make the virtual avatar extremely realistic.

OnePlus Concept Phone Invisible camera

OnePlus showcased this concept phone at CES and its key feature is the invisible camera technology.  The cameras are placed underneath an electrochromic glass which can change from opaque to transparent making the cameras effectively invisible while not used.

The company said that it takes 0. 7 seconds for the glass to transition from transparent to opaque or vice versa.  The glass is also able to become semi-transparent so that the user can shoot better photos in very bright sunlight.  The panel includes two 0. 1 mm glass panels and organic material for a thickness of just 0. 35 mm.

CoolPad First 5G Phone

Coolpad showed off its first 5G smartphone at CES 2020.  Named Coolpad Legacy 5G, it will cost $359 and offer a range of modest specifications for that price point, one of which is its dual 48MP + 8MP rear dual camera setup.

It has a large 6. 53” FHD+ IPS LCD display, which is based on Pixel work’s HDR technology and paired with HDR 10 support, as well as a waterdrop notch.  For selfies, you have a 16MP shooter hidden in the notch.

It houses 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage and support for microSD cards of up to 128GB.  The Legacy 5G packs a 4,000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.

World First 5G PC Unveiled

For over a year we have been talking about 5G smartphones; now it is time to start talking about 5G notebooks.  Dell, HP, and Lenovo showcased their first laptops with 5G connectivity at CES 2020.

INTERNET / Google Assistant Will Now be Able to Read in 42 Languages
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:07:47 PM »
Google is currently showcasing the new feature for its Google Assistant on Android phones.  The new feature makes it a more efficient super screen reader.

When a user gives a prompt saying, “Hey Google, read this,” it will find the main text on whatever webpage or article you’re looking at and read it out loud to you.

Google says it has improved the Assistant’s ability to parse sentences and therefore speak them with more natural, human-sounding cadences.

Currently in development, the Read It feature will be able to turn whatever text you have on the screen to voice, and it should support 42 languages once it actually launches.

A user can hear an example of how the voice tries to sound more natural by parsing sentence patterns in the promo video Google has made for the feature:

When you say “Okay Google, read it”, it will activate text-to-speech engine and will read out in a “natural manner”, according to the dev team.  However, the article must be opened either in the Google app, Google Chrome or Google News platform – no third-party apps will be supported initially.

No word from Google yet when it will be roll out, but it is expected to be soon.

INTERNET / Nigerians in These 14 States May Pay More for Data and Voice
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:07:30 PM »
Telecom companies acting under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) said they may have no choice but increase tariffs for voice calls and data over the decision of 14 state governments to increase the cost of right of way (RoW) for telecommunication infrastructure.

ALTON warned that the regime of discriminatory tariff regime may become inevitable as they operate under different conditions in some states.

The chairman of ALTON Gbenga Adebayo lamented that some states have seen the telecoms sector as a cash cow that should be milked, adding that they come with very spurious taxes, charges, and levies.

But this threat is coming hours after Isa Pantami, minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said he has written to state governors to comply with the national economic council’s (NEC) resolution on the Right of Way.

The states which hiked the levy are Lagos, Kano, Anambra, Ondo, Cross River, Kogi, Osun, Kaduna, Enugu, Adamawa, Ebonyi, Imo, Kebbi, and Gombe.

The RoW charge is the levy paid to state governments for laying of optic fiber on state roads.

At present, the cost of RoW on federal roads is N142 per linear meter.

The 14 states, however, increased RoW fees from between N300-N500 per linear meter to between N3,000-N6,000 per linear meter.

The new management of the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) increased the RoW fee from N500 per linear meter to N5,000 per linear meter.

A single telecom operator needs RoW covering thousands of kilometers.

Note, a viable conclusion is yet to be drawn as it is currently being deliberated upon by the association.  If peradventure it comes to conclusion, the states listed above will pay more for data and voice.

INTERNET / Airtel Nigeria Officially Launches Airtel TV – Good or Bad?
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:06:02 PM »
We announced to you late in December 2019 about Airtel TV, Well it has now been made official by Airtel Nigeria.  Guess what, Airtel TV has no subscription… It is free to stream.

On like other streaming platform like iroko, Netflix etc where you have to subscribe for a month to watch a particular movie, with Airtel, Subscription is free.

Airtel Nigeria isn’t the first telco to launch a TV or music streaming app.  In 2019, 9mobile introduced SuperTV app which allows customers to watch movies and shows in Nigeria.  Also, MTN Nigeria launched MusicTime! — its music streaming platform — that allows users to enjoy local and international music.

AirtelTV app, which is subscription-free, promises to be a “one-stop platform” for music videos, live stations, and sports news.

The Airtel TV app is accessible to both iOS and Android users on the Airtel network as an Airtel number is required on signing up.  Additionally, only registered users can have unlimited access to the app’s content library.

Airtel has partnered with Trace Africa, Discover Digital, and other content providers to bring content to the platform.

Users on AirtelTV can watch movies — Nollywood and Bollywood — but can’t download content from the platform.  And with a stable Internet connection, users can choose to stream in low, high, auto, or medium quality.

On the app users can watch movies in languages which include Hausa, Swahili, Hindi, Yoruba, Igbo, and Shona; however, the movies in these languages are old.

How to Download Airtel TV

For iOS users, search Airtel-TV on iTunes

For Android users, search Airtel TV on Google Play Store

Now that Telecom providers are diving into digital space, it is time to consider the cost of data in streaming on these platforms.  The cost of Internet subscription is still high in Nigeria as compared to some other African countries.

We need cheap data, cheap subscription in Nigeria.

Have you downloaded the app, let us know what you think about it in the comment

« on: January 20, 2020, 07:05:20 PM »
It is no longer news that Glo 1. 2GB for N200 has been discontinued and users have been seeking  for an alternative way of surfing the net for the same amount.

MTN NG also offers the same 1GB for N200 winback data plan in which most people has been using for a while now.  Unfortunately, subscribers are now complaining that they are no longer eligible for the offer, meaning this offer also has been discontinued.

Your best option at the moment is to go for Airtel Data Reversal.

To those who don’t already know, this is how it works;

Airtel NG launched a new service that enables users to reverse the money used in subscribing for data.

For instance if you subscribed N1000 for 1. 5GB, you can reverse the money after 24hours provided that you didn’t touch the main data.

How to Reverse Your Data Bundle to Get More Than Airtel 3GB Data

Step 1: Get a new 4G Airtel SIM and you’ll automatically be eligible for double bonus data offer
Step 2: Kindly subscribe to your desired data plan after a successful response from their double bonus activation center

Step 3: Now, dial *141# to purchase any data plan of your choice using your 4G Airtel SIM card.  Your purchased data, bonus data, 4G bonus data will all be given to you.

Step 4: Within 24 hours of purchase, kindly reverse the data by dialing *121*6#, select the amount of data you previously purchased that you want to reverse and then, your money will be restored back to you.

Step 5: Subscribe again with your reversed Airtime and use only the bonus data only.  Keep repeating the process if you want more data.

The trick works well on both Airtel 3G and 4G SIM cards.

INTERNET / How to Check Your NIN (NIMC) Number Using USSD Code
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:04:46 PM »
We’ve earlier published how to check if your National Identity Card is ready or not because some of you have registered for NIMC for long but don’t even know if it’s ready for collection or not.

Today, for those who have enrolled or registered but will like to check their NIN number, instead of going directly to the NIN office to check, you can simply do that with the aid of the newly announced USSD code.

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers (usually 11 in number) that is assigned to a user individual upon successful enrollment for the National Identification System by NIMC.

Perhaps you’ve enrolled but misplaced the paper slip given to you, here is how to check your NIN number with USSD code.

How to Check NIN Number Using USSD Code

To check, simply follow the steps below:

Navigate to your dialer or phone app and dial *346#
Select the “NIN Retrieval” option, by typing in ‘1’ to check your NIN number if you dialed this code from the phone number you used when registering for your NIN.
Select “NIN Search” by typing in ‘2’, to check your NIN by inputting some of your registration details if you’ve lost your phone number or using another phone.
Congratulations, you are finally able to check your NIN for your mobile device.
Note:

Make sure you have at least N20 Airtime on your phone because you’ll be charged a onetime fee of N20 once you dial the USSD code above.

You must dial from the sim associated with a previous registration of either voter’s card, driver’s license, bvn or any other registration that got your thumbprint and photo.

And finally, you can also check if the original Plastic NIMC is ready for collection or not by checking this post here.

Let us know if you have any challenge with the code in the comment.
