NIGERIANS WORSHIP THE RIVER GOD OSUN
« on: September 02, 2008, 08:45:22 AM »

Thousands of Nigerians have been taking part in the annual Osogbo festival of the river-god Osun. Devotees, mostly from the Yoruba community, congregate in a sacred grove to seek Osun's blessings.

They clamber down to the river?s edge to drink the tea-brown water and be blessed by the white-clad priestesses.

In the sacred grove, now a protected forest reserve recognised by Unesco, cement figures loom out of the forest.

They are the work of Susanne Wenger and her colleagues. The 94-year-old Austrian has lived in Osogbo for 58 years and has become a high priestess of Osun.

Most Yoruba people are either Muslim or Christian but many also believe in traditional deities such as Osun. She is one of the most popular Yoruba spirit-gods, or "Orishas".

They make offerings, or sacrifices, at the feet of statues of the spirits in the grove, of such things as chickens, rams, and bitter kola nuts.

This boy is going to make a sacrifice of a dove he has bought in the town?s market. He will whisper a prayer into its ear, bite its wing feathers and throw it into the river.

Osun?s main gift, devotees say, is fertility. Children born after sacrifices are made to her are then baptised in the river water.

A young woman, who must be a virgin (hidden under the red cloth), brings offerings of food in a giant calabash bowl through a crowd to the main shrine in the grove.

As the offerings are prepared for the next stage, devotees cleanse themselves of bad spirits by passing their hands over their heads and clicking their fingers.

A local strongman brings out the offerings in a wooden bowl. He takes it to the waters' edge and tips them in.

The devotees rejoice, their bond with the spirit world is renewed for another year, which they hope will guarantee them prosperity and success.

The goddess, me bro, the goddess and no i don't worship her either.  Just like I don't go miracle hunting at lourdes, or bathe in the ganger or amnoint my self with holy water from the pope or his subordinates.  My point is religious intelorence usually starts with the snide cracks, buffoonish guffaws and brainless banter peeps call fun! Okie dokie ???

I find it very critical when people make stupid jokes about other peoples believe.
I have always wanted to meet susanne ,the austrian priestess.she is really old now.long time I have not seen a recent picture of here.I hope she is still alive next year cause i want to take my kids there to look at the statues of the different gods she made.
