Muslims hailed on Coroner?s Law
« on: August 28, 2008, 05:21:07 PM »
MUSLIM Rights Concern (MURIC), a religious body, has commended muslims in Lagos for their maturity, patience and conduct in handling the Lagos Coroner Law.

The group which gave the commendation in a statement by its director, Dr. Is-haq Akintola, also praised muslim leaders in the state for sacrificing their time and energy towards finding a peaceful solution to the coroner issue.

Lagos State government recently began the implementation of its coroners system law 2007, a development that caused so much stir not only among muslims but also other stakeholders including the Medical Guild. Muslims in particular, became agitated when they could not secure the release of their dead from mortuaries for days.

Akintola said "There is no doubt that this is an issue which, if not properly handled, could have snowballed into a religious conflagration.

We appeal to muslims throughout the country to dialogue with the relevant authorities whenever they are aggrieved. Nigerian muslims must put violence behind them forever."

The statement recalled that a high ranking officials of the state government had requested MURIC to coordinate an identification of offensive areas of the law and forward same to him.

"This is already being tackled by the muslim lawyers Association. On Friday, August 22, a high powered delegation of muslim leaders led by the Chief Imam of Lagos met Governor Raji Fashola who promised to effect corrections where the law offends the sensibilities of muslims.

"MURIC regards this as a positive development. We have observed that the present state government is listening and willing to amend the law.

"We also observe that the state has readily opened its doors to muslims to express their grievances over the coroner law. This is a most welcome development," the statement added.
