UPS DONATES TO PACELLI SCHOOL
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:54:48 AM »
The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of United Parcel Service, has made a grant of $5,000 to the Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children, Surulere, Lagos.

A statement obtained by our correspondent on Friday said the grant would be used to provide spe...ed learning materials for pupils at the school, which trains over 120 pupils and is famed for instructing its pupils in sports (swimming, athletics) and music.

According to the president of the foundation, Ms. Lisa Hamilton, ?Giving back to communities is an important part of UPS?s over 100 year-old culture that is embraced by our employees through volunteerism, making donations and sharing their unique skill sets. Together with nonprofit partners such as Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children, we work to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need.?

The statement said, ?The UPS Foundation has a grant budget of more than $100,000 specifically allocated to Africa including Nigeria. We believe this will provide the most beneficial support for philanthropic programmes and community relationships in Nigeria.?

During the presentation, Rev. Sister Grace Ushie of Pacelli School expressed gratitude and said that the grant would go a long way in helping the school procure useful instructional materials for her pupils.

According to her, none of the instructional materials used in the school is sourced from Nigeria and plans by the Federal Ministry of Education to locally produce texts in Braille and large prints have not yet materialised.

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts on social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified literacy, hunger relief and volunteerism as its focus areas.

In 2006, the foundation distributed over $45m worldwide through grants that benefit organisations or programmes such as the formal training of partially or non-sighted children around the world and provides support for building stronger communities.

The school was founded about 40 years ago by Catholic missionaries.
