Police extortion of motorists shameful ? DIG
By Sunday Aborisade, Akure, Published: Monday, 3 May 2010

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Investigations, Mr. Israel Ajao, has described the activities of some policemen, who harrass and extort motorists, as shameful and disgraceful to the force.

He, however, said that many of the errant officers were being arrested and disciplined daily through an internal self-cleansing mechanism adopted by the force.

Ajao, who stated this in Akure on Friday when he visited the Ondo State Police Command as part of his tour of commands in the South-West, charged all the Divisional Police Officers in the state to intensify efforts at involving the leadership of the various residents associations in the geo-politicial zone in crime prevention and control.

The DIG also advised the DPOs to open a register for all the vigilance groups and their members operating in their various commands.

He said, ?All non-performing DPOs will soon be flushed out from the system. I see no reason why a DPO should be in the office when he should be on the field with his men combing criminal hideouts.?

Ajao also advised policemen at road blocks across the country against shooting at vehicles when their drivers refused to stop for checks.

Rather, he advised them to allow such vehicles to go since such driver would meet other road blocks before getting to his destination.

?Any policeman who shoots and kills innocent Nigerians is on his own. It is better for 100 armed robbers to escape in a vehicle than for the police to kill one innocent passenger. If a vehicle was not arrested in Ondo, who says it could not be arrested in Edo State? Stop these arbitrary killings,? he warned.

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, Mr. Ballah Nasarawa, described the command as very peaceful, because only 19 cases of armed robbery had been recorded this year while no bank robbery or kidnap had been recorded in any of the 33 divisions since the beginning of the year.

shameful is an underestimation. police these days shamelessly collect money, give balance publicly as if it is one of their duties. This is the lowest level integrity degradation.
