Election: Students plan debate for candidates
From DAVID ONWUCHEKWA, Nnewi
Monday, January 4, 2010

National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) South East/South South zone otherwise known as zone B has fixed a debate for all the gubernatorial candidates in the February 6, 2010 election in Anambra State.

Addressing the press, the deputy co-ordinator of the zone, Comrade Nwankwo Ezekiel who said that the association was founded with the objectives to complement the efforts of Nigerian leaders in advancing the cause of rapid and uniform socio-economic, political and infrastructural development of the region vowed that the students body will stop at nothing to ensure that the forthcoming election will be free and fair.

He said tt is important to note, that at this critical time of the nation?s democratic system, transiting from one elected civilian government to another that peaceful, free and fair electoral process should be the watch word, adding that the association?s enthusiasm for democracy is not for inept leaders but for people oriented leaders.

Comrade Ezekiel said it is in the light of this that the association on behalf of its teeming population in zone B categorically makes bold to invite all the governorship candidates of political parties who believe in social change to come forward to present before the students their genuine intentions on how best to tackle unemployment and other teething problems in the state.?

?At this juncture, we call on the governorship candidates whose plans may be to use the Nigerian students to cause mayhem or violence during the election to have a rethink and allow the good people of the state to elect their governor in line with the democratic process. We, therefore, advise those youths or students who have resolved to end up as political thugs to think about their future and what becomes of their children,? Ezekiel warned.

The association leadership has also called on traditional rulers in the state and well-meaning Anambra people to rally support for the development of the state, ?as we are battle-ready to protect our votes and even go on revolution should anything happen to whoever the teeming millions of Nigerian students would have chosen at the end of the in-view debate.?

The association equally appealed to the security agents, the media and entire people of the state to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the February 6, 2010 election is free and fair.
