FOUR ARMY GENERALS JOSTLE FOR COS JOB
« on: June 01, 2008, 05:03:23 PM »
AT LEAST four retired Army Generals are among some eminent persons scheming for attention as possible replacement for Major General Muhammed Abdullahi, who until Thursday was the Chief of Staff to President Umaru Yar?Adua.

The Presidency named Dr. Gbolade Osinowo, in an acting capacity on Thursday following the resignation of Abdullahi.

As at Saturday, some influential camps were also pushing forward for the plum job.

However, there were indications that some hawks were already positioning their favourites as well for the post of the Governor of the Central of Nigeria currently occupied by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

Though it was not clear if he had indicated his intention to quit office, yet the lobbyists stepped up their activities after the President said the government might carry out some changes to reinvigorate his administration.

One of the names being put forward as likely substantive replacements for Abdullahi is Gen. Chris Garuba (rtd), who was the Chief of Staff during the Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar regime.

Another name being touted is General Alwali Kazir, who was the COS to the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

Others are Kogi-born Major-General M. C. Alli (rtd), Major-General Edet Akpan (rtd) who is from Akwa Ibom State and a former head of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim, believed to have the backing of some influential Katsina elite.

The Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, and Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Dr. Sayaddi Abba-Ruma, are being tipped for the same post. They are believed to be favoured by some forces within the government circle.

Ruma and Tanimu are among the closest associates of Yar?Adua.

There were indications that Taminu could be moved from the position of Chief Economic Adviser to either Chief of Staff or CBN governor.

Some influential northern elements, who felt concerned that no northerner had held the CBN governorship position in many years were making projections for the appointment of three candidates.

They are a former Managing Director of FSB Bank, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatudeen; a Kano prince, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who has held directorship positions at Union Bank and First Bank, along with: Alhaji Falalu Bello who had been at the helm of affairs at the defunct Intercity Bank and Unity Bank.

Gen. Ibrahim Babangida?s family and their close associates have substantial interests in both banks.

However, when contacted by our correspondent for clarifications on reports of planned removal of CBN governor and lobby by some northern bankers, presidential spokesman, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, said that he was not aware of such plans to remove the CBN governor now.

?They cannot remove the CBN governor. There is a law. And what has he done to be removed?? he asked.

It will be recalled that the President, in a recent interview with the Financial Times of London, said he had no problems with Soludo.

He said that although Soludo had made some mistakes, he was doing well.
