Let Me Give My Opinion From A Different Perspective:

If you are comparing quality, budgeted funds for making the movies and/or films, and other aspects, there really is not a comparison at this time--but the gap will shorten as technology, electrical power,  and other things are not a problem in Africa.  But is it not amazing how far Nollywood has come even with the above problems (at least I think so).

As an African American citizen (born and raised), I really love Nollywood and Hollywood equally.  What draws me to Nollywood is that the majority of the actors and actresses are Black. We are not use to seeing that many Black stars in films in the US.  Even though it should be obvious that more Blacks will be in Nollywood movies, for it is Africa (after all), but still I am not use to seeing such a wonderful sight.   It took years for Black actors and actresses to climb up the rank of being able to be accepted and seen as more than a maid or butler to the White race in a film.  And even with our achievements, we have a long way to go.  Though Hollywoods special effects, brillance, and shine is much further ahead than Nollywood's abilities at present, it makes me feel good as an African American to see my African brothers and sisters reigning as the "stars" there.  And it fills a void within me whenever I start missing Africa, for I feel closer to it when I watch the movies (i.e. foods they eat and the sights and sounds that are different from America).  I really love Nollywood as much as Hollywood--but for different reasons!

Some of Nollywood biggest problems are Budget and NEPA, because many Nigerians never watch Nollywood films due to NEPA.

well, pmdabor has hinted my view as concern hollywood & nollywood.
why should we compare them in the first place, their age brackets are not the same..

nollywood is fast-growing and should be encouraged by patronising them.

we, africans are found of judging  a book by the name
without going through it.

some nollywood films are entertaining, educating & interesting to watch just like
some hollywood films are good.

Sure we need to encourage them but there is need for the producers to be checked by their boards and not encourate unreasonable films or unnecessary copy of Hollywood films, they should be sanctioned.

Pidgin english is the best.

The very reason why nollywood came overall 3rd postion in Film making is because of the mass production of sub standard movies.the quantity of movies nollywood put to Market every week is alarming, comparing  Nollywood to other film producing Countries in terms quality production is a problem.

I did not see that rating.  Was Hollywood first?  If so, who ranked second?

Pidgin english is the best.

Question:
If pidgin english is used in Nigerian films, will it be competitive outside of Nigeria?  The reason I say that is many Americans, including myself, cannot understand it.  In addition, it is not considered proper grammar.  In foreign films, we know they are speaking Italian, Latin, French, Spanish, etc., and it is accepted; for it is an official language of a particular country.  However, will pidgin english ever be a recognizied language?  Though Africa is known for having over 300 native languages (so we have been educated to believe so), English  is the official language.  And if pidgin english will not be recognized as an official language, will the films "full of pidgin english" be taken seriously among those that judge its content and quality?

That's the negative side of using pidgin english in Nigerian films,
it make them unmarketable abroad.

Yes, I am afraid that is what will happen if they put pidgin english in films.

NO,we're just selling our slangs abroad just like the Americas.

The difference, Chris-jaxxmen, is that we have slang "words" not entire slang sentences.  When I try to read pidgin english mostly every word in the sentence is pidgin--as opposed to some of our slang "words" that you may see in a sentence, which was written there for a particular reason (i.e. the author thought it brought flavor for a particular reason).

Now African Americans who live in Charleston, South Carolina (which is about an hour and a half from where I live and one of the first places where slaves were brought over from Africa), use many slang words.  Last year I went down there and stopped into a fast food restaurant to ask for directions, and I really could not hardly make out anything the woman said.  Her accent, combined with the slang words she used, made it very difficult for me to understand her.  I did not want to ask her to repeat what she said a third time, so I simply thanked her kindly and got directions from another place. It surprised me to hear how differently we African Americans speak--being just an hour and half apart (though I am originally from New Jersey--not South Carolina).

I do not think Americans literally sell slang words, but many people like to pick up our phrases and many other things.  And guess what, when I was in Lagos, I tried to pick up my Ijaw relatives phrases and words and respect their culture by bowing down to my mother-in-law, which is not done in America.
