« on: August 28, 2013, 09:53:22 AM »
Women and children were reported to have been floating on water for several hours in Gutsura community of about 500 households in Gummi local government of Zamfara state when a heavy rain flooded the community.

Blueprint reports that residents and neighbouring communities found it very difficult to evacuate women, children and valuables as the entire community was over flooded.

Victims said locally made canoes had to be used to get access to the submerged community to facilitate the evacuation exercise.
According to them, structures at the community, including mosques and primary school buildings, were either damaged or destroyed completely.
Acting Governor of the state, Alhaji Sanusi Garba, during an
assessment visit to the village, ordered the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to relocate the victims without delay.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Atiku Sani, said already a primary school had been secured at Gyalange town to serve as a temporary camp for victims.

He added that the agency would collaborate with the local government council and the emirate council to secure land for total relocation of the affected people.
