Allah says: ?O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you As it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-?[al-Baqarah: 183].
Sufyan ibn Abdillaah (Rd) said: ?O Messenger of Allah, tell me something about Islam, which I cannot ask anyone else besides you.? He said: ?Say: ?I believe in Allah? and then be steadfast (upon that).? [Muslim Hadith no. 38]

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All Praise is due to Allah! We praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our evils and bad deeds. Anyone who is guided by Allah, is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, the Only One without any partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and final messenger to mankind. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon His last and final Apostle, his Household, his companions and all his followers until the end of time.
 The ayah quoted above puts in simple terms the essence of fasting the month of Ramadan; ?? that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-? [al-Baqarah: 183]
 According to Wordweb Dictionary, self-restraint means, ?exhibiting restraint imposed on the self or lessen the intensity of; temper; hold in restraint; hold or keep within limits?? But, according to Islam?s dictionary, self-restraint means doing and saying all the dos, as well as avoiding all the don?ts which can prevent one from the torment of hell-fire in the next world.
 Thus, Ramadan is a period in which Muslims are extensively trained for complete one month to learn and keep for life ways, methods and tactics of retraining themselves from falling into the webs of Satan, the coursed one. It is a period in which Muslims are moulded to fit the specified traits, habits and manners which Islam stands for. That is to say anything short of that will be a clear sign of rejection and dismissal.
 A complete change of behaviours and attitudes from the bad ones prior to the commencement of the fasting, throughout Ramadan and upon completion. This is because the essence of fasting is to attain total forgiveness from all previous sins and moral deficiency, as well as mercy and salvation from the hell-fire. In other words if one knew of having of any awful manner or social paucity that has been disturbing him, such as illicit sexual indulgence, alcohol consumption or drug addiction, backbiting, slandering and infighting, one should try as much as possible to effect a positive transformation and completely depart from such. Such doing signifies one?s acceptance of any act of worship. For simple classification of one?s Ramadan fast in order to know the right group ones belongs are as follows:
 1. Becoming positive in the performance of the five daily prayers on their appointed times and especially in congregation is a very good evidence of rightness of one?s hajj.
 2. Allah says: ?(O Prophet), recite the Book that has been revealed to you and establish prayers. Surely prayers forbids indecency and evil. And Allah?s remembrance is of even greater merit. Allah knows all that you do?. [al-Ankabut: 45]
 3. Fulfilment of pledges as against empty promises and unfulfilled commitment. Unfortunately defaulting pledges and oaths have become universal and regular habits of especially third world politicians and their electorates. But, after a successful completion of Ramadan fasting, there should not be deliberate uttering of ?white lies? by any Muslim politician to their electorates, subordinates and followers.
 Breaking of promises and contracts for no shariac reasons, are clear sign of rejected Ramadan fast.
 Allah says: ?Those who break Allah?s Covenant after it is ratified, and who sunder what Allah has ordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: these cause loss (only) to themselves.??[al-Baqarag: 27]
 ?Is it not (the case) that every time They make a covenant, some party among them throw it aside?- Nay, Most of them are faithless.? [al-BAqarah: 100]
 ?But those who break the Covenant of Allah, after having plighted their word thereto, and cut asunder those things which Allah has commanded to be joined, and work mischief In the land;- on them is the curse; for them is the terrible home!? [Ar-Ra?ad: 25]
 4. Cheating of all sorts is forbidden at any moment of one?s life. Thus, when a returnee from hajj stills swindle, defrauds and bamboozles, that means the hajj was defective. That is to say an accepted hajj leaves no blames in one?s attitude.
 Allah says: ?And cover not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth when ye know (what it is).? [al-Baqarah: 42]
 ?And do not eat up your property among yourselves for vanities, nor use it As bait for the judges, with intent that ye may eat up wrongfully and knowingly a Little of (other) people?s property.? [al-Baqarah: 188]
 ?Ye people of the Book! why do ye clothe truth with falsehood, and conceal the truth, while ye have knowledge?? [al-Imran: 71]
 ?O ye who believe! eat not up your property among yourselves In vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good-will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for Verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful!? [an-Nisa?: 29]
 5. Hypocrisy has never for once been any part of a believer?s traits. Its Co*ktail of social detestable attitudes includes insistence lies, customary dishonesty, habitual betrayal of trusts and regular confrontation even when amicable resolution has been achieved. When any of these despicable behaviours ceases to characterize ?ramadanites? daily attributes, then such a person deserves from fellow Muslims re-admission into fold of believers again!
 Allah has extensively expose the hypocrites in the following verses, thus:
 ?Of the people there are some who say: ?We believe In Allah and the Last Day;? but They do not (really) believe. Fain would They deceive Allah and those who believe, but They only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not! In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: and grievous is the penalty They (incur), because They are false (to themselves). When it is said to them: ?Make not mischief on the earth,? They say: ?Why, we only Want to make peace!?. Of a surety, They are the ones who make mischief, but They realise (it) not. When it is said to them: ?Believe As the others believe:? They say: ?Shall we believe As the fools believe?? Nay, of a surety They are the fools, but They do not know. When They meet those who believe, They say: ?We believe;? but when They are alone with their evil ones, They say: ?We are really with you: we (were) only jesting.? Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and give them rope In their trespasses; so They will wander like blind ones (to and fro). These are They who have bartered guidance for error: but their traffic is profitless, and They have lost true direction.? [al-Baqarah: 8-16]
 6. Dedication and commitment to the performance of one?s routine religious duties in their various degrees of importance and magnitude. Taking over religious enthusiasm of the once restrained and disinterest in religious activities, is a good sign of acceptable Ramadan.
 Allah says: ?Who believe In the Unseen, are steadfast In prayer, and spend out of what we have provided for them. And who believe In the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before Thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter. They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper.? [al-Baqarah: 3-5]
 Abdullah ibn ?Amr reported that the Apostle of Allah said: ?Four traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite and whoever possesses some of them has an element of hypocrisy until he leaves it: the one who when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise, when he disputes he transgresses and when he makes an agreement he violates it.? [Muslim and Bukhari]
 7. Demonstrating and sustenance of compassionate relationship with siblings by helping the weak and sick among them as well as reconciling the aggrieved ones. This deed is a vital means of acquiring and winning the mercy of Allah in both worlds.
 Allah says: ?It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe In Allah and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast In prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, In pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.? [al-Baqarah: 177]
 8. Positive active participation in communal religious and social advancement for collective benefits without waiting for praise from the community. Sharing both the gains and pains of your immediate neighbourhood, in an effort to promote mutual trusts, intra-harmony and reciprocal obligations.
 9. Among the most credible indications of an acceptable Ramadan is the sensation of the sweetness and lovability of credence and the consciousness of inner contentment during and after performing any act of worship rightly or putting forward of any sacrifice aimed at attainment Allah?s gratification and commendation. There is that feeling satisfaction and happiness emanating from the heart, despite one?s worldly worries and uncertainties. Indeed despite all tribulations around haunting all, everywhere!
 10. Periodic fasting should be sustained all the year round. Fasting of the Mondays and Thursdays, the 13th., 14th. and 15th. of every month, the Tasu?a and Ashura, the Arafat day and the infamous six Shawwal should routinely observed as much as possible.
 The Prophet (pbuh) said: ?Fear Allah wherever you are, follow up the evil deed with good one, it will remove it and relate with people with good conduct.? [At-Tirmidhi]
 Therefore, let those who are unwavering to go back to sins after Ramadan know that Allah is always pleased with those who obey Him not considering the month the obedience takes place and is angry with those who disobey Him irrespective of the month the disobedience takes place. The essence of prosperity does not merely lies in long life alone, but interwoven with good deeds. A person?s continuation of good deeds without restricting it to a certain period, particular day, month or special place is a sign of one?s righteousness and acceptance of his good deeds.
