THE ODESSEY
« on: May 03, 2008, 08:48:32 PM »
Odesseus king of Ithaca had succeeded in defeating Troy after convincing the soldiers to present Trojan Horse, inside which was hidden thousands of soldiers that took Troy by surprise.

He then launched into self-glorification praising himself for the victory of Troy battle and casting aspersion on the integrity of gods of river and the sky.

The Poseidon, god of wine dark sea, who had aided his victory by eliminating the soothsayer that was about revealing the dirty trick Trojan Horse represented, got angry and cursed Odesseus. Saying he would never again set eyes on his (odesseus) kingdom. That Odesseus would drift aimlessly on river poseidon for ethernity.

Odesseus, arogant and pompous discountenanced the curse and offered no apology. Thence began an adventurous journey that took him to the land of death. For over fifteen years, odesseus and his soldiers journeyed through the seas and Island but never reach Ithaca.

Meanwhile, some powerful men in Ithaca were about taking his most precious possession: his wife and his kingdom(which he has built with his hands and blood).

In the end, Odesseus learnt one important lesson everyman must write in his heart: THAT MAN IS NOTHING WITHOUT GOD.

Has anyone watched the film? Let see if we can get more out of it. I think the film illustrated vanity of man in his drive for power and raised many questions. For instance, was odesseus right in killing all the suitors after he found his way home?

I was thinking he missed a point. He missed the ultimate point of his years of suffering. Remember, poseidon punished him for his perceived arogance. He ought to have handled the case in another way.

Supposing the gods are unforgiving and hard on him, he would never have seen ithaca again. But the gods are good to him. Hard he been killed by Poseidon, he would never have had opportunity to save his wife and kingdom.

I think, he acted in fit of anger. Rightly or wrongly, he show us why men are mortal.
