After several weeks of having less than three companies on the price gainers’ chart, the capital market at Tuesday’s close of transaction had five companies recording price appreciation.
 


Specifically, Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and Nigeria Breweries Plc gained 40 kobo each to close at N8.54 and N31.00 per share respectively.

Custodian and Allied Assurance Plc, First Bank Plc and Unic Insurance Plc chalked up 13 kobo, 10 kobo and 9 kobo, to close at N2.85, N19.20 and N1.93 per share in that order.

On the other hand, blue chip stocks recorded significant losses as Guinness Nigeria Plc and Flour Mills Nigeria Plc shed N4.09 and N2.99 to close at N77.85 and N56.92 per share respectively.

Seven up Bottling Company Plc and Nigerian Bottling Company Plc followed closely on the price losers’ chart, dropping by N2.06 and N2.01 to close at N44.50 and N38.79 per share in that order.

The banking sub-sector, however, continued its dominance on the activity chart accounting for 70 per cent of total turnover.

It traded 114.919 million shares, valued at N1.071bn in 3,790 deals. This represented a volume decrease of seven per cent over 122.949 million shares, valued at N1.029bn traded the preceding day in 2,782 transactions.

As in the previous day, the shares of Spring Bank Plc drove turnover in the sub-sector, accounting for 40 per cent of volume.

The bank traded 45.873 million shares, valued at N256.431m in 106 deals.

The insurance sub-sector followed on the activity chart accounting for nine per cent of total turnover.

It traded 14.707 million shares, valued at N23.383m in 436 deals, representing a volume increase of 50 per cent over 10.418 million shares, valued at N21.811m traded at Monday’s close in 241 transactions.

Turnover in the sub-sector was boosted by activities in the shares of International Energy Insurance Plc, Investment and Allied Assurance Plc and Lasaco Assurance Plc, which accounted for 37 per cent of the sub-sector’s turnover.

The three companies traded 7.604 million shares, valued at N10.564m in 164 deals.

The market capitalisation of the 303 listed equities, however, closed lower; shedding N194bn or 2.5 per cent, from N7.725tn on Monday to N7.531tn.

Similarly, the All-Share-Index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange dropped by 2.5 per cent from 35,213.45 to 34,327.64.

In all, investors staked N1.536bn on 163.968 million shares in 6,188 deals as against 159.602 million shares, valued at N1.572bn, traded the preceding day in 4,820 transactions.
