Career Diplomats Decry Non-Appointment To Head Missions
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:39:59 AM »
CONCERNED that the Federal Government is appointing more and more non-career diplomats to head Nigerian Missions abroad, career diplomats in the Nigerian Foreign Service are becoming restive.

As several Nigerian Missions abroad await newly appointed ambassadors of the President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration, this fear is growing, especially among career diplomats currently abroad, many of whom spoke under the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

They expressed frustrations, including having to wait for several years on one level as a means to slowing down their promotion to the peak of their careers, that is, becoming full-fledged ambassadors.

Last week, at least 20 of the newly appointed ambassadors were reportedly cleared to depart for their new posts abroad. But career diplomats, including those currently based in Nigerian Missions abroad, are concerned that some of them long overdue to be named full ambassadors might never be so appointed.

In a particular Nigerian Mission in a prominent western country, there are at least five senior career diplomats who have reached the point of being appointed as substantive heads of the Mission. But like many of their colleagues across the world and others at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, frustration is beginning to set in due to the preponderant appointment of politicians and non-career diplomats as substantive heads and ambassadors of Nigerian Missions abroad.

A one-time Nigerian Foreign Affairs minister explained that in the past, career diplomats got at least 50 per cent of ambassadorial postings.

The former minister lamented that the figure had now dropped to about a third.
