  MOCPED seeks university status

The Provost, Michael Otedola College of (Primary) Education, Epe, Prof. Anthony Oguntoye, has expressed the willingness of the institution to transmute to a university of basic education.

Oguntoye, who said this after the National Universities Commissionís Resource Visitation Panel visited the college on Monday, said the college had all it takes to become a university.

According to a statement issued and signed by the MOCPED Registrar, Mr. Mukadas Fujah, Oguntoye assured the panel led by Mrs. Justina Emerole that the college would not only strive to attain the desired objectives of the NUC, but would also rise to the challenges to transmute to a university of basic education.

He thanked the NUC for painstakingly assessing degree programmes being run by the college in affiliation with the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The NUC panel comprising Emerole, Prof. Abdalla Adamu of the Bayero University, Kano, and Prof. O.I. Enukoha of the University of Calabar had visited the college to assess the various programmes run under UNAD affiliation.

Specifically, the panel was asked to measure the level of preparedness of the college to give quality education to students in the degree programme unit of the institution.

At the end of the visit, Emerole expressed satisfaction with the infrastructural and academic facilities on ground at the college.

The panel also commended the college for the provision of improved facilities and recruitment of highly qualified personnel to handle the various programmes.

However, one of the NUC team, Adamu, advised the college to begin in earnest the processes of upgrading its status to Africaís first university of basic education.

He also urged the college to work closely with the Universal Basic Education Commission in policy formulation and NERDC in actualising the institutionís vision of becoming a reputable university of education.

The collaboration with the NERDC, the panel noted, would help the college in developing its curriculum.
