LG DISTRIBUTES FREE TEXT BOOKS TO 27,000 PUPILS
« on: October 12, 2008, 06:40:31 PM »
The Abeokuta South Local Government has begun the distribution of branded textbooks and exercise books to 27,000 pupils in the council‘s primary schools.

The project, according to the Chairman of the local government, Mr.  Yanju Lipede, who spoke to our correspondent at the inauguration of the distribution of the books in Abeokuta on Friday, will cost the council N37m annually.

Lipede explained that the text books covered Mathematics and English for all the classes in the primary schools while the 27,000 pupils in 49 schools would equally get six exercise books each.

”One of the major differences between the public and private schools is, there are facilities that aid.  What we have done in this regard is to bridge the gap between the private and the public schools,” said the Chairman at the ceremony, where the Wife of the State Governor, Chief Olufunke Daniel, was the guest of honour.

”We want to eliminate the complex which the pupils of public schools usually have when placed side by side with the pupils of the private schools.  With this assistance, the pupils will not be at a disadvantage position against their counterparts because we have also distributed free teachers’ aid to the tutors.  The pupils now have free English and Mathematics textbooks. ”

The local government boss believed enough check had been put in place to prevent abuse or some people making money out of the books that are supposed to be free.

Lipede said, ”The books are branded and on each page, you will see the mark Not for Sale.  So, you cannot sell it in the open market.  You can only be cutting corners only when the materials are not enough.  We have extra.  So, if a child loses his or her books, the parents can replace such through the Local Education Authority, who will monitor the distribution of the books.  The rate that we will sell such replacement will be cheaper than what is obtained in the open market; so, it will not even be attractive to buy at the open market.
