Amaechi set to introduce free primary education in Rivers

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday said his administration was putting finishing touches towards the implementation of free and compulsory primary education in the state.

Amaechi said details of the policy were being worked out, adding that the implementation would commence as soon as the ongoing audit of primary schools was concluded.

He decried the decaying infrastructure in schools and promised to address the situation in order to strengthen the educational sector, which he said, was fundamental to human resource development.

While acknowledging poverty and unemployment as the greatest challenges confronting people, he said, as a responsible government, his administration would tackle them.

The government, he said, was equally dealing with the problems of infrastructure and healthcare services.

According to him, hospitals and health centres were being built, especially in the rural areas to provide affordable and quality health care services for those who could not access private healthcare facilities.

He warned that the state government would not fold its hands and allow few misguided youths to cause social unrest and drive away investors from the state under the guise of the Niger Delta struggle.

He said, ?Youths who stay in the creeks and perpetrate all sorts of heinous crimes including raping, maiming, killing and kidnapping of innocent young children could not claim to be freedom fighters. The children also have the right to education, and good living.
?It is the responsibility of the state and Federal Government to provide them the conducive atmosphere to study and my government will do everything possible to achieve that.?
