Dangote Foundation donates N120m to fight famine in Niger •N50m relief materials to Jigawa
Monday, September 27, 2010

President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has donated relief materials worth over N120 million to assist famine victims in Niger Republic. The donation of the items, which include 3,000 bags of sugar (50kg), 6,000 bags of flour (50kg), 3,000 bags of salt (50kg) and 30,000 cartons of Dangote noodles, was made through the Dangote Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dangote Industries Limited, West Africa’s leading manufacturing conglomerate.

Alhaji Sada Ladan-Baki, an executive director in the Dangote Group, who made the donation on behalf of Dangote recently, said the gesture was in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“The relationship between Nigeria and Niger Republic is like that of brothers,” he said. “We cannot sit back and watch our brothers suffer. It is in line with our corporate social responsibility that we are making this donation to alleviate the suffering of the people.”

Explaining the significance of the aid materials, he said, “salt and water are good for oral rehydration therapy (ORT), noting that this will assist the victims of the famine to regain their health; while Dangote noodles will provide instant relief for the malnourished people. He also said flour, which is used to make bread, a staple food, and other snacks, is one of the easiest forms of food to prepare for victims of famine.” Ladan-Baki, who expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for facilitating the donation, said the company would continue to reach out to people that require humanitarian aid.

While expressing gratitude to Dangote for the gesture, Col. Garba Maikido, one of the three governors from Niger Republic present on the occasion, said such initiatives would go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the people. Dangote Foundation also recently donated 3,000 cartons of spaghetti, 6,000 cartons of noodles and N50 million to the Jigawa State Government to alleviate the suffering of flood victims.

The government commended Dangote for the donation, saying that it would help to meet the needs of the people.
