DOKUBO-ASARI, HARRY’S SON IN WAR OF WORDS AT ESO PANEL
« on: June 27, 2008, 01:47:30 PM »

The ongoing public hearing of the Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission was almost disrupted on Thursday when two witnesses engaged each other in a war of words.

Trouble started when Inye, the son of late Chief Marshal Harry, was re-invited to appear before the commission to defend the evidence he gave earlier over the killing of his father.

The late politician’s son had during his earlier appearance before the Justice Kayode Eso-led commission, accused former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and former governor of the state, Dr. Peter Odili, of collusion in his father’s murder.

He also named the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Tonye Harry and his father’s former aide, Mr. Ipalibo Harry, as being involved in the crime.

But while giving fresh evidence, Inye accused the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Dokubo-Asari, of being biased in the testimony he gave before the commission.

Reading from a prepared text, he said Dokubo in 1981 had a ‘mental problem’, which he said, resulted in his being chained and taken to a location in Port Harcourt Township for treatment.

He dismissed the evidence given by the NDPVF’s leader which absolved Tonye Harry his father’s murder, saying he would not join issues with a ‘mad man’.

While he was giving evidence, Dokubo, who was seated behind the witness box, started trading insults with the witness.

At a point, it was difficult for the commission’s orderly to restore order as the two witnesses threw loud verbal attacks against each other.

Ipalibo later told the commission that Harry collected money from Odili when he was in a financial crisis, adding that he slumped twice before him.

He said the late All Peoples Party chieftain had reconciled with Odili and was collecting money from the former governor even when he was in another party.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress has advocated the use of a lie detector at the ongoing public hearings.

The leader of the party, Mr. Tonye Princewill, gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt.
