David Carradine has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel room.

The 72-year-old Kill Bill and Kung Fu star was in Thailand filming his latest film Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder.

Mr Binder told the BBC the news was "shocking", adding: "He was full of life, always wanting to work... a great person."

Carradine was found by crew members after failing to turn up for a dinner.

The Nation newspaper quoted police sources as saying he was found hanged in his luxury room and is believed to have committed suicide.

Carradine is perhaps still best known for his role as a Shaolin priest travelling the American frontier West in Kung Fu, which was shown on TV from 1972-75.

He said recently: "I'm too old for the parts I did 35 years ago. But instead, what I get now with this nice little pile of quality movies that are all waiting to be released, is this assortment of really tough old men."

(2)  BANGKOK - Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. One of his prominent early film roles was as singer Woody Guthrie in Ashby's 1976 biopic "Bound for Glory."

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

The character, the worldly father figure of a pack of crack assassins, was a shadowy presence in 2003's "Kill Bill - Vol. 1." In that film, one of Bill's former assassins (Uma Thurman) begins a vengeful rampage against her old associates.

In "Kill Bill - Vol. 2," released in 2004, Thurman's character comes face to face again with Bill himself. The role brought Carradine a Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actor.

Bill was a complete contrast to his TV character Kwai Chang Caine, the soft-spoken refugee from a Shaolin monastery, serenely spreading wisdom and battling bad guys in the Old West. He left after three seasons, saying the show had started to repeat itself.

After "Kung Fu," Carradine starred in the 1975 cult flick "Death Race 2000." He starred with Liv Ullmann in Bergman's "The Serpent's Egg" in 1977 and with his brothers in the 1980 Western "The Long Riders."

But after the early 1980s, he spent two decades doing mostly low-budget films. Tarantino's films changed that.

"All I've ever needed since I more or less retired from studio films a couple of decades ago ... is just to be in one," Carradine told The Associated Press in 2004.

"There isn't anything that Anthony Hopkins or Clint Eastwood or Sean Connery or any of those old guys are doing that I couldn't do," he said. "All that was ever required was somebody with Quentin's courage to take and put me in the spotlight."

One thing remained a constant after "Kung Fu": Carradine's interest in Oriental herbs, exercise and philosophy. He wrote a personal memoir called "Spirit of Shaolin" and continued to make instructional videos on tai chi and other martial arts.

In the 2004 interview, Carradine talked candidly about his past boozing and narcotics use, but said he had put all that behind him and stuck to coffee and cigarettes.

"I didn't like the way I looked, for one thing. You're kind of out of control emotionally when you drink that much. I was quicker to anger."

"You're probably witnessing the last time I will ever answer those questions," Carradine said. "Because this is a regeneration. It is a renaissance. It is the start of a new career for me.

"It's time to do nothing but look forward."

NEWS / AUSTRALIA'S LAST WORLD WAR ONE SOLDIER DIES, AGED 110
« on: June 03, 2009, 07:18:18 PM »

The last remaining Australian to serve in World War One has died at the age of 110, Veterans' Affairs Minister Alan Griffin said on Wednesday.

John "Jack" Ross, who was also Australia's oldest man having turned 110 in March, died in his sleep early Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Bendigo in the state of Victoria.

Ross was 18 when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1918 and trained at the wireless training school, but the war ended nine months later and before he could be posted overseas. He was discharged on Christmas Eve that year.

"Mr. Ross showed his willingness to serve Australia and her allies in what was an extremely tumultuous time in our history, and for that we are grateful," said Griffin in a statement.

"While he did not travel overseas, he completed his training, ready for deployment."

Griffin said Ross was the last of 417,000 Australians who served in World War One and one of only a handful of remaining veterans from that war.

Ross served Australia again in World War Two as a member of the Volunteer Defense Corps. As a civilian, he worked for the Victorian railways before retiring in 1964.

"It now falls to Australians everywhere to ensure that veterans memory is kept alive. We must ensure that their contribution to Australia's wartime history is passed on to future generations, so that their sacrifice is never forgotten," said Griffin.

NEWS / WIFE OF BOSTON FACE TRANSPANT DONOR SPEAKS OUT
« on: June 02, 2009, 06:59:03 PM »
The wife of a Massachusetts man whose tissue was donated for the nation's second face transplant said her husband told her before heart transplant surgery that he wanted to donate his organs if he didn't survive the operation.

Susan Whitman told The Boston Globe for a story in Wednesday's editions that she was surprised, however, when organ bank officials asked if she would approve of the donation of Joseph Helfgot's face.

Whitman and their four children held a conference call and quickly agreed it was the "right thing to do."

Helfgot, 60, learned to appreciate the value of life from his Holocaust survivor parents, friends and family said.

"It's easy to sign up and say you are an organ donor," Whitman said. "It's another to have your family understand and facilitate that. It's painful and it takes strength and a will to do it."

Helfgot never woke up after his April 5 heart transplant and the face operation took place on April 9, the day before Helfgot's funeral.

"He would be happy to know he went out with a bang," she said.

The recipient's identity hasn't been released, but Whitman said she would one day like to meet the man who received her husband's nose, roof of his mouth, upper lip, facial skin, muscles and nerves. Doctors have said the recipient will not look like the donor because his bone structure is different.

Helfgot was a New York City native who founded MarketCast, one of Hollywood's leading research companies.

Whitman said she went public with her story because she hoped to inspire others to become organ donors.

TRANSPORT / SEARCH CONTINUE FOR THE VANISHED PLANE
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:40:34 AM »

The search for survivors on board a plane which vanished over the Atlantic is continuing, with the airline confirming five Britons were among the passengers.
One of the British passengers is believed to be Arthur Coakley, from Whitby, North Yorkshire, whose wife Patricia spoke to him as he waited for his flight to be called.
Three Irish women, all in their mid 20s, were also on the Air France Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, and were named locally as Aisling Butler, of Roscrea, Co Tipperary, Jane Deasy of Dublin and Eithne Walls, originally from Belfast.
The three best friends, who were forging out promising careers as doctors, were returning home after a holiday in Brazil with other friends who graduated with them from Trinity College Dublin two years ago. A Welsh woman was also among the group of friends.
A total of 228 people were on board the flight, including 12 crew, a baby and seven children. The passenger list of 216 people included 61 French, 58 Brazilians and 26 Germans, among the 32 nationalities. The crew were all French.
The airline said the list was based on information from the Brazilian authorities.
The aircraft had run into stormy weather with strong turbulence around four hours into the flight. About 15 minutes after the turbulence message, an automatic message was received from the plane - AF447 - indicating a failure in the electrical circuit. Air France said the plane, whose wings were made in Britain by Airbus A340, could have been struck by lightning.
Meanwhile, pilots flying a commercial jet from Paris to Rio de Janeiro for Brazil's largest airline, TAM, said they saw what they thought was fire in the ocean along the Air France plane's route early on Monday.
Brazilian Air Force spokesman Col Jorge Amaral said authorities were investigating the report. "There is information that the pilot of a TAM aircraft saw several orange points on the ocean while flying over the region ...where the Air France plane disappeared," Col Amaral said.

"After arriving in Brazil, the pilot found out about the disappearance (of the Air France plane) and said that he thought those points on the ocean were fire."

TRANSPORT / 5 BRITONS ON BOARD MISSING PLANE
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:36:49 AM »

Five Britons were on board a passenger airliner which vanished over the Atlantic Ocean, Air France has said.
A list posted on the airline's website said the Britons were among 228 people on board the Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
The aircraft had run into stormy weather with strong turbulence around four hours into the flight.
About 15 minutes after the turbulence message, an automatic message was received from the plane - AF447 - indicating a failure in the electrical circuit.

David Learmount, of Flight International magazine, said: "An event like this is the kind the aviation world hoped it would not see again, because it involves a world-class carrier flying the latest generation of airliner, and it occurred en route, not during take-off or landing in difficult weather.

"It's a chilling reminder that nothing is impossible, however unthinkable."
Air France expressed its "deepest sympathy" to the relatives and friends of the 216 passengers and 12 crew.
It has opened freephone numbers reserved for relatives and friends. They are 0800 800 812 in France, 0800 881 20 20 in Brazil and + 33 1 57 02 10 55 for calls from all other countries.

NEWS / GOVMNT REVOKES SALE OF NITEL TO TRANSCORP
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:17:22 AM »
Govt revokes sale of NITEL to TRANSCORP
By Sonny Aragba-Akpore (Lagos), Madu Onuorah and Mathias Okwe (Abuja)

TRANSNATIONAL Corporation of Nigeria (TRANSCORP) 30-month unimpressive management of Nigerian Telecommunications Plc (NITEL) came to an end yesterday with the Federal Government cancelling the sale of the once state-owned telecommunications giant to the core investor.

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP), which announced government's action yesterday in Abuja, said TRANSCORP had left NITEL in a mess.

The council, which said it was clear that TRANSCORP lacks the resource and technical competence to run the enterprise, explained that a technical board would be raised to manage NITEL until a new investor was selected for the firm.

At a press conference in Abuja yesterday, NCP member and Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr. Christopher Anyanwu, said the NCP's decision was informed by the fact that TRANSCORP had breached the condition precedent on which the investment deal in NITEL/M-Tel was consummated, the implication being that TRANSCORP had walked away from the deal on its own.

Anyanwu said: "The NCP is of the opinion that TRANSCORP has opted out of the NITEL/M-Tel because it has failed to meet the condition precedent. The sale is hereby withdrawn. It is void because it never existed in the first place due to their failure to keep with the terms of the transaction agreement.

"TRANSCORP is aware of this fact and they have already given us the power of attorney (waves the paper) for their equity in the investment.

"Accordingly, the Federal Government has stopped the further sale of all assets of the two companies, whether core or non-core. In the same vein, all sold assets are to be reviewed and any found to have been arbitrarily and unjustifiably sold are to be recovered.

"Consequent upon this decision, a technical board is to be inaugurated today (yesterday) to take over the management of the two companies till September this year when its re-privatisation to a more competent and serious core investor is hoped to be completed," Anyanwu added.

He hinted that the government was desirous of having the two companies and other privatised non-performing enterprises back on stream and would not leave any stone unturned in this direction.

The BPE boss said in view of the fact that TRANSCORP might have sourced their investment funds from banks and other entities, government may open up discussions with the affected institutions to assist them claim their investments.

At exactly 1.10 p.m. on November 14, 2006, the baton of ownership for NITEL and its subsidiary, the M-Tel, changed hands from the government to TRANSCORP.

Before yesterday's action, TRANSCORP had left NITEL with a debt overhang of $500 million owed a consortium of banks.

By a Shares Sales and Purchase Agreement (SSPA) signed between the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and TRANSCORP on November 14, 2006, 51 per cent equity of NITEL was transferred to TRANSCORP while the government retained 49 per cent.

Under the Post-Acquisition Plan (PAP), TRANSCORP agreed to inject a minimum of N8 billion new funds into NITEL to prepare it for competition within 30 days and 100 days after the take-over. The PAP was to start the transition of NITEL and its mobile subsidiary, M-Tel, to a profitable and strategic telecommunications operator.

But 30 months after, NITEL's fortunes have nose-dived with its workforce reduced from 13,000 at take-over to less than 1,000 and telephone exchanges and other immovable assets such as switches in comatose.

NCP under the chairmanship of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan approved the constitution of a technical board to manage the affairs of NITEL/M-Tel until a new core investor emerges.

Minister of State for Information and Communications, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, who read the resolution of the NCP meeting, said the revocation was arrived at after discussing "the outstanding issues in TRANSCORP's management of NITEL/M-Tel and other issues contained in the Shares Sales Purchase Agreement (SSPA)."

According to him, the decision was based on "serious breaches of the terms and conditions of the SSPA, particularly:

exiting of British Telecommunications (BT) as the technical operator, which is condition precedent in the SSPA;

failure of TRANSCORP to inject N8.9 billion cash into NITEL within 100 days of its take-over to address the immediate liquidity problem facing NITEL;

failure to pay interconnectivity debt totalling about N17 billion;

inability to pay workers' salaries in the past 11 months; and

failure of TRANSCORP to maintain NITEL/M-Tel as a going concern, resulting in complete loss of market share from 15 per cent to 0.03 per cent.
Bilbis said it is clear that "TRANSCORP has vitiated and voided the contract in its entirety."

Former Communications Minister of State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande, had in a working paper he sent to President Yar'Adua on January 22, 2008, recommended that since TRANSCORP had failed to irrevocably revive NITEL/M-Tel, the government should source for another core investor with the financial muscle and expertise to revive the national asset.

Nakande's letter was sequel to a resolution of a meeting of NITEL's shareholders on December 17, 2007.

One of its recommendations was share dilution by government and TRANSCORP as part of the bailout options besides scouting for a competent core investor in the long-run.

He also recommended a technical board to oversee the affairs of the company pending the selection of a core investor.

Nakande asked the government to recover assets sold by TRANSCORP, and a review of transactions of all non-performing privatised enterprises.

Then Director-General of BPE, Mrs. Irene Chigbue, handed over NITEL title deeds and other corporate insignias to the chairman of TRANSCORP, Prof. Ndidi Okereke-Onyuike, at a ceremony held at the NITEL corporate headquarters in Abuja, signifying the transfer of ownership.

Chigbue then said: "We are happy to see the conclusion of a long and difficult process which rates as one of the best on record for Nigeria and its people based on the objectives attained, beginning with the proceeds which is one of the biggest privatisation transactions in Africa and the second biggest telecommunications transaction in Nigeria after the Celtel/V- Mobile deal."

TRANSCORP, which was the lone bidder in the last ditch effort to sell the NITEL on July 3, 2006 offered a bid price of $750 million for 75 per cent equity.

HUMOUR and JOKES / I WILL BE HAPPY
« on: May 30, 2009, 03:26:09 PM »

I'll be happy when...

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation or when we retire. The truth is there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges.

It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with ... and remember that time waits for no one.

So, stop waiting ...
Until your car or home is paid off.
Until you get a new car or home.
Until your kids leave the house.
Until you go back to school.
Until you finish school.
Until you lose 10 lbs.
Until you gain 10 lbs.
Until you get married.
Until you get a divorce.
Until you have kids.
Until you retire.
Until summer..
Until spring.
Until winter.
Until fall.
Until you die.

There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and, dance like no one's watching.

Young man goes into a pharmacy and says to the   pharmacist, "Hello, could you give me condom? I'm going to my girlfriends for dinner and I think I may  be in with a chance!" The pharmacist gives him the condom and as the young man is going out; he returns and says,

"Give me another condom because my girlfriend's sister is very cute too. She always crosses her legs in a provocative   manner when shesees me and I think I might strike it  lucky there too." The pharmacist gives him a second  condom and as the boy is leaving he turns back and  says, "Go on, give me one more condom because my   girlfriend's mum is still pretty cute and when she   sees me she always makes eyes, and since she invited   me for dinner, I think she is  expecting me to make a move!

During dinner, the young man is sitting with his  girlfriend on his left, the sister on his right and the  mum facing him. When the dad gets there, the boy  lowers his head and starts praying, "Dear Lord, bless  this dinner and Thank you for all you give us." A   minute later the boy is still praying; "and Thank you  Lord for your kindness." Ten minutes go by and the boy   is still praying, keeping his head down.

The others   look at   each   other surprised and his girlfriend is even more   surprised than the others. She gets close to the boy and says in his ear,  "I didn't know you were so   religious." The boy replies,"I didn't know your  DAD  was a  pharmacist!'

SPORTS / TALLEST BASKETBALLER
« on: May 29, 2009, 11:47:14 AM »

At 7-foot-9, it?s hard to overlook Chinese center Sun Mingming. The comparisons with NBA star Yao Ming(notes) are inevitable.

Able to dunk while barely leaving the ground, Sun just completed the most successful season of his pro career, helping the Hamamatsu Phoenix to a first-place finish in the Eastern Conference of Japan?s professional basketball league.

?I just want to keep playing basketball,? the 25-year-old Sun said after the final game of the season. ?Whether it?s here in Japan or in the United States, I hope to keep playing for at least 10 more years.?

His size has led to the comparisons with his compatriot Yao of the Houston Rockets, but Sun?s lack of speed is considered by some experts as a barrier to a career in the NBA.

If he ever makes it to the NBA, Sun would be the tallest player in the league?s history, overtaking Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan, who both stood 7-foot-7. Yao, at 7-foot-6, is the tallest active NBA player.

?He?s a pretty good passer and a good shooter,? said former Cleveland Cavaliers scout Robert Pierce, who now coaches in Japan. ?He?s so big that he could have a chance in the NBA but I think his size would be lessened because of the athletic ability and speed of NBA players.?

Sun was on a one-year contract with Hamamatsu and said he will weigh his options as he bids to take his game to the next level.

The Bayan, China, native went to the U.S. in 2005 to train for a possible career in the NBA and was declared eligible for the draft that year. But after a brief tryout with the Los Angeles Lakers, he was not selected.

The feedback then was that Sun lacked stamina and aggressiveness.

The news got worse for him that summer, although it perhaps explained a couple of his on-court deficiencies. Sun learned that he had a benign brain tumor pressing against his pituitary gland. The tumor was preventing the proper production of testosterone, decreasing his stamina and endurance.

The tumor was also causing an overproduction of growth hormone resulting in a condition known as ?acromegaly? that causes various parts of the body to sustain abnormal and unstoppable growth.

The tumor was successfully removed in September 2005. Despite being in his 20s, he?d grown four inches taller in the previous few years.

Since the surgery, Sun has been a well traveled journeyman. He played with several minor league basketball teams including the Dodge City Legends of the United States Basketball League, the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association and the Grand Rapids Flight of the International Basketball League.

In 2007, Sun played for Mexican professional team Fuerza Regia before coming to Japan.

Sun played in 14 games for Grand Rapids and 25 games for Fuerza Regia so his 49 games this season is a big improvement.

Endurance is obviously becoming less of an issue.

Sun played in the all-star game in his first season in Japan and had 67 dunks in 49 games. He averaged 7.7 points and had 280 rebounds. In April, he had a season-high 19 points and 13 rebounds in 33 minutes against the Niigata Albirex BB.

Despite his improved play, Sun admits there are points to his game he needs to work on.

?We?re a pretty fast team and sometimes I have trouble getting back in the play,? said Sun, who started playing basketball when he was 15. ?But I?ve been working on my conditioning and feel pretty good now.?

Playing against Sun can be a daunting task to many of his opponents.

?It?s surreal,? says 6-foot-8 forward Lynn Washington, a two-time MVP in Japan. ?You can?t really do much because he?s so big. He just holds the ball up in the air and it looks like a tennis ball.?

Washington?s Osaka Evessa teammate Ryan Blackwell said playing against Sun generates some unique challenges.

?He changes the whole dynamic of your thinking when you?re in the game,? Blackwell said. ?He doesn?t move as well laterally so it?s a lot easier to move around him than over him. There are times when he is really aggressive on the court but he needs to be that way more consistently.?

Sun?s resume even includes an appearance in the 2007 comedy Rush Hour 3 with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. After appearing in the fight scene, he said he?s more interested in basketball than Hollywood.

?I think I?ll stick to basketball for now,? Sun said. ?I don?t want people to think I?m not totally focused on playing.?

For now, he plans to enjoy some home comforts for a while, returning to China to play in a tournament and catch up with family.

?I haven?t been home in almost two years,? Sun said. ?I just want to go home and see my family.?

NEWS / OLDEST MUM KEEPS MUM ABOUT CHILD
« on: May 29, 2009, 11:40:15 AM »

A 66-year-old businesswoman thought to be the UK's oldest new mother has been keeping mum about her baby son.
The hospital where Elizabeth Adeney is believed to have given birth earlier this week said she wanted "no publicity".
And a friend staying at her home in Lidgate, Suffolk, said he could make "no comment on anything".
Mrs Adeney's Renault car was parked outside the house with a baby seat fitted in the back.
Neighbours said Mrs Adeney, who is divorced, had kept her pregnancy secret.
Earlier this month Mrs Adeney had refused to speak to journalists about her pregnancy and drove away from her home at speed to avoid being photographed.
She is understood to have undergone fertility treatment abroad and delivered her baby by caesarian section.
A spokesman for Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, said: "She has told us that she wants no publicity."

GENERAL HEALTH / TO MUCH COLA CAN CAUSE MUSCLE PROBLEMS
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:47:44 PM »
In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

Two of the patients were pregnant women who were admitted to hospital with low potassium levels. One was a 21-year-old woman who drank up to three liters of cola a day and complained of fatigue, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. An electrocardiogram revealed she had a heart blockage, and blood tests showed she had low potassium levels, the researchers explained in a news release.

The second pregnant patient, who'd consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.

Both patients made a rapid and full recovery after they stopped drinking cola and took oral or intravenous potassium. The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.

Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola -- glucose, fructose and caffeine -- can contribute to hypokalemia.

"The individual role of each of these ingredients in the pathophysiology of cola-induced hypokalemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients," Elisaf said. "However, in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose."

However, "caffeine-free cola products can also cause hypokalemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea," Elisaf said.

NEWS / OBAMA PICKS EX ASTRONAUT BOLDEN TO LEAD NASA
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:30:02 AM »

President Barack Obama will name former space shuttle commander Charles Bolden to lead NASA, the White House said on Saturday, in the midst of a major shift in the U.S. human space program.

Bolden, 62, a retired Marine general, flew on four shuttle missions before leaving the U.S. space agency in 1994 to return to the military.

Bolden, who would become the 12th administrator in NASA's 51-year history and its first black head, is seen as a strong advocate for human space flight.

"I think it's good news and good for the agency," said Frank Siezten, a Washington-based space consultant.

"All things being equal, he'll come down on the side of the current architecture. He's got an investment in the current system but he knows enough to ask the hard questions. You're not going to be able to roll Charlie Bolden."

Obama also intends to name Lori Garver, a space consultant who oversaw space-related issues for his transition team, as NASA's deputy administrator, the White House said.

"These talented individuals will help put NASA on course to boldly push the boundaries of science, aeronautics and exploration in the 21st century and ensure the long-term vibrancy of America's space program," Obama said in a statement.

Following the Columbia shuttle disaster in 2003, NASA and the Bush administration backed a recommendation by the accident investigators to retire the rest of the shuttles in 2010 after completion of the International Space Station. NASA has eight missions left to fly.

The fleet's retirement will leave the United States without the ability to reach the space station until a new vehicle is ready to fly in about 2015. Russian Soyuz capsules will be used in the interim for trips to the space station.

Controversy about how to bridge the gap and the planned design for the new vehicles spurred Obama to appoint an independent panel, headed by former Lockheed Martin chairman Norm Augustine, to review the U.S. human space flight program.

The report is due in August.

'DYNAMIC LEADER'

The appointments need to be confirmed by the Senate, where Bolden has strong support, most notably from Florida Democrat Bill Nelson.

"Charlie is the kind of dynamic leader I believe the president was looking for and I know he'll meet these challenges head on," Nelson said.

Nelson flew as a guest on the shuttle Columbia in 1986 with a crew that included Bolden as the pilot.

Houston Mission Control relayed the news of the nominations to the seven-member crew of the shuttle Atlantis, which was prevented from landing in Florida on Saturday by bad weather.

Atlantis, winding up a 12-day repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, will try for a touchdown on Sunday.

Bolden was selected to become an astronaut in 1980. He stayed with NASA during its painful recovery after the 1986 Challenger disaster and went on to pilot the 1990 mission that launched the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit.

He later commanded a 1992 shuttle atmospheric research flight and in 1994 led a mission that included the first Russian cosmonaut as a member of a shuttle crew.

The astronaut/cosmonaut exchange program culminated in a partnership to operate the International Space Station.

Bolden grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and earned a bachelor of science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968. He later attended the University of Southern California and earned a master's degree in systems management.

Garver, 48, president of the Capital Space consultancy, also worked previously at NASA, serving as the agency's associate administrator of Policy and Plans from 1998 to 2001.

NEWS / WOMAN GAVE BIRTH TO SEXTUPLETS & RECOVERING
« on: May 23, 2009, 11:39:28 AM »
Mother of sextuplets 'recovering'Mother of sextuplets 'recovering'

A mother who gave birth to sextuplets in just five minutes is recovering in hospital.
The babies - four girls and two boys - weighed between 1lb 7oz and 2lb 2oz and doctors confirmed they were not conceived through IVF.
Their condition in intensive care was described as "as good as could be expected".
Friday's successful Caesarean section birth - which involved 30 medical staff - was 14 weeks early.
It is believed to be the first case of sextuplets in Northern Ireland.
The parents are understood to live in the Kildress area of County Tyrone, close to Cookstown, an isolated rural region.
Medical staff said it was a stressful experience for all of them, a happy day but potentially difficult.
The birth of sextuplets is rare, occurring in about one out of 4.5 million pregnancies. The proportion of multiple births has increased by 20% in the last decade, figures for England and Wales show.
In December 2002 Rhonda and Noel Loughran, from Cabragh, Co Tyrone, became parents to only the 12th set of natural quintuplets to be born worldwide since records began.
The most famous sextuplets in the UK are the Waltons, all girls, who were born in Liverpool in 1983.

Two women switched at birth have met for the first time 56 years after the hospital blunder was finally exposed.
Kay Rene Reed Qualls and DeeAnn Angell Shafer were born at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner, eastern Oregon, in 1953. They grew up happily, got married, had children and became grandparents.
But last summer their lives were turned upside down when they found out that they were switched at birth.
They recently met for the first time and underwent DNA tests after a woman who knew both their mothers called Ms Qualls' brother, Bobby Reed, with her suspicion.
Mr Reed said the 86-year-old woman knew his mother and had also lived next door to the Angell family.
"She said she had something she had to get off her chest," he told the East Oregonian newspaper.
The woman, who he would not identify, told him that Marjorie Angell had insisted she had been given the wrong baby after the nurses returned from bathing the two newborns, but her concerns were brushed off.
Mr Reed was stunned, learning later that rumours of a mix-up had been around for years. In early February, Ms Shafer learned the truth in a telephone call from her sister Juanita.
Ms Qualls, Mr Reed and one of their sisters met Ms Shafer at a Kennewick, Washington, clinic last month for DNA testing. A week later, Ms Qualls got the results, learning her likely probability of being related to her brother and sister was zero.
Ms Shafer's DNA report said she had 99.9% of being related to Bobby and Dorothy Reed. Now living in Richland, Washington, Ms Shafer said the report only confirmed what she knew after meeting Ms Qualls.

HUMOUR and JOKES / CONDOM PALAVER
« on: December 24, 2008, 08:39:40 PM »
A young man goes into a pharmacy and says to the   pharmacist, "Hello, could you give me condom?
I'm going to my girlfriends for dinner and I think I may  be in with a chance!" The pharmacist gives him the
condom and as the young man is going out; he returns and says,

"Give me another condom because my girlfriend's sister is very cute too. She always crosses her legs in a provocative   manner when she sees me and I think I might strike it  lucky there too." The pharmacist gives him a second  condom and as the boy is leaving he turns back and  says, "Go on, give me one more condom because my   girlfriend's mum is still pretty cute and when she   sees me she always makes eyes, and since she invited   me for dinner, I think she is  expecting me to make a move!

During dinner, the young man is sitting with his  girlfriend on his left, the sister on his right and the  mum facing him. When the dad gets there, the boy  lowers his head and starts praying,  "Dear Lord, bless  this dinner and Thank you for all you give us."
A   minute later the boy is still praying; "and Thank you  Lord for your kindness.
" Ten minutes go by and the boy   is still praying, keeping his head down.

The others   look at   each   other surprised and his girlfriend is even more   surprised than the others. She gets close to the boy and says in his ear,   "I didn't know you were so   religious." The boy replies, "I didn't know your  DAD  was a  pharmacist!'

Fourth Place :

A man bumps into a woman in a hotel lobby and as he does,
his elbow goes into her ---.
They are both quite startled.

The man turns to her and says, 'Ma'am, if your heart is as soft as your ---,
I know you'll forgive me.'
She replies, 'If your --- is as hard as your elbow, I'm in room 221.'

Third Place :
One night, as a couple lays down for bed, the husband starts rubbing his wife's arm.
The wife turns over and says 'I'm sorry honey, I've got a gynecologist appointment tomorrow and I want to stay fresh.'
The husband, rejected, turns over.
A few minutes later, he rolls back over and taps his wife again.
'Do you have a dentist appointment tomorrow too?'

Runner Up:
Bill worked in a pickle factory.
He had been employed there for a number of years when he came home one day
to confess to his wife that he had a terrible compulsion.
He had an urge to stick his --- into the pickle slicer.
His wife suggested that he should see a sex therapist to talk about it, but Bill said he would be too embarrassed.  He vowed to overcome the compulsion on his own.
One day a few weeks later, Bill came home and his wife co uld see at once that something was seriously wrong.
'What's wrong, Bill?' she asked.
'Do you remember that I told you how I had this tremendous urge to put my --- into the pickle slicer?'
'Oh, Bill, you didn't' she exclaimed.
'Yes, I did.' he replied.

'My God, Bill, what20happened? '

'I got fired.'
'No, Bill.  I mean, what happened with the pickle slicer?'
'Oh...she got fired too.'

Winner:
A couple had been married for 50 years.
They were sitting at the breakfast table one morning when the wife says, 'Just think, fifty years ago we were sitting here at this breakfast table together.'
'I know,' the old man said.  'We were probably sitting here naked as a jaybird fifty years ago.'
'Well,' Granny snickered.  'Let's relive some old times.'
Where upon, the two stripped to the buff and sat down at the table.
'You know, honey,' the little old lady breathlessly r eplied, 'My nipples are as hot for you today as they were fifty years ago.'
'I wouldn't be surprised,' replied Gramps.   'One's in your coffee and the other is in your oatmeal

HUMOUR and JOKES / MAN'S WISH
« on: December 13, 2008, 09:28:25 PM »
God created the donkey and said to him. "You will be a donkey. You will work un-tiringly from sunrise to sunset
carrying burdens on your back. You will eat grass, you will have no intelligence and you will live 50 years."
The donkey answered: "I will be a donkey, but to live 50years is much. Give me only 20years"
God granted his wish.

God created the dog and said to him:
"You will guard the house of man. You will be his best Friend.
You will eat the scraps that he gives you and you will live 30years.
You will be a dog. "
The dog answered: "Sir, to live 30years is too much, give me only15 years.
" God granted his wish.

God created the monkey and said to him:
"You will be a monkey. You will swing from branch to branch doing tricks.
You will be amusing and you will live 20 years. "
The monkey answered:
"To live 20years is too much, give me only 10years."
God granted his wish.

Finally God created man...and said to him:
"You will be man, the only rational creature on the face of the earth.
You will use your intelligence to become master over all the animals.
You will dominate the world and you will live 20years."

Man responded:
"Sir, I will be a man but to live only 20 years is very little, give me the 30years that the donkey refused,
the 15years that the dog did not want and the 10years the monkey refused.
" God granted man's wish

And since then, man lives 20 years as a man , marries and spends 30 years like a donkey,
working and carrying all the burdens on his back.

Then when his children are grown, he lives 15years like a dog taking care of the house
and eating whatever is given to him, so that when he is old,  he can retire and live 10years like a monkey,
going from house to house and from one son or daughter to another doing tricks to amuse his grandchildren.

That's Life.
