NEWS / Woman finds $357,959 cashier's check and returns it
« on: April 10, 2009, 02:17:07 AM »
LOS ANGELES ? As she walked from a post office, Talon Curtis thought she'd found one of those gimmicky sweepstakes offers on the ground that scream something like "$357,959.55" in big bold letters and "This is not a real check" in much smaller type. But just as she was about to do her part for a cleaner planet and deliver the paper from the parking lot to a trash can, she noticed it was a real cashier's check with a real signature.

"I couldn't believe it. I almost passed out," Curtis, who works as a loan negotiator, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "I have never seen a check that big. Not in my possession, anyway."

She immediately set out to find its rightful recipient, but it was Saturday afternoon and the banks were closing. On Monday, with help from KCAL-TV reporter Dave Malkoff, she located the check's owner, who had arrived at her bank in a panic.

"I think she had walked in at the same time the bank manager called me back," Curtis said. "I could hear her walking up to him. and I could hear all this commotion in the background."

Curtis said she spoke briefly with the woman on the phone about a possible meeting, but Pacific Mercantile Bank instructed her to mail the check to them instead.

Not willing to take a chance on the mail, Curtis delivered it personally. A bank employee confirmed it had arrived.

Curtis said she never thought of keeping the check for herself, and she declined the woman's offer of a reward. Still, she's just a little disappointed.

"I just wanted to see her face," Curtis said, laughing. "I just wanted to let her know that there are honest people left in this world."

GENERAL HEALTH / Octuplets hospital workers fired
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:01:21 AM »

Suleman, 33, gave birth to the six boys and two girls in January

Fifteen hospital workers have been fired for improperly accessing the medical records of octuplets mother Nadya Suleman, officials have said.

Eight other staff at the Bellflower medical centre near Los Angeles were disciplined for looking at the records without permission, the hospital said.

The single mother, 33, gave birth to the six boys and two girls in January.

The violations of health care privacy laws had been reported to the state, a hospital spokesman said.

"Despite the notoriety of this case, to us this person is a patient who deserves the privacy that all our patients get," said the spokesman, Jim Anderson.

He added that there was no indication any of the information had been distributed to the media.

Jeff Czech, Ms Suleman's lawyer, said his client did not plan to sue over the breach.

He said he suspected the hospital employees were looking for medical information on the sperm donor who had fathered the octuplets, the Associate Press news agency reported.

The name of the donor is not listed on the medical records, Mr Czech added.

Ms Suleman became just the second person recorded in the US to have delivered a set of living octuplets when she gave birth on 26 January.

The six boys and two girls, who were nine weeks premature, were delivered by Caesarean section in the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower hospital near Los Angeles, California.

Ms Suleman, who already had six children when she gave birth, had checked in to the hospital 23 weeks into her pregnancy and gave birth seven weeks later.

The US's first live-born set of octuplets was delivered in Houston, Texas, in 1998.

Migrants are prepared to risk the crossing for the lure of a better life

UN aid agencies are suggesting wealthy industrialised nations should perhaps rethink their policies on immigration and asylum in the wake of the latest tragedy in the Mediterranean, writes the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva.

Reacting to the news that at least 200 migrants were feared dead off the coast of Libya, after the smugglers' boat which was supposed to take them to Italy capsized, the head of the UN refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, said the barriers to legal migration had become too high.

"This is a tragedy that is multiplying itself, in the Mediterranean, in the Gulf of Aden, in south-east Asia. More and more people are trying desperately to move," Mr Guterres told the BBC.

Those people [would-be migrants] will take risks if the doors aren't open. They'll go in by the back window if the front door isn't open
Patrick Taran
International Labour Organisation

While the trend towards globalisation was encouraging free trade, there were still lethal barriers to people, he added.

"I think it's important to recognise that in today's world where as we have seen, money moves so freely, and goods tend to move also more and more freely, there are still tremendous obstacles for people."

"People need to move because they can no longer live in their countries of origin because of war, because of environmental degradation, because of poverty, there are many reasons that force people to move."

'Total disprespect'

The UN refugee agency estimates that more than 67,000 people undertook the dangerous voyage to Europe in smugglers' boats in 2008.

More than 1,700 are known to have died, but that figure could be far higher, because no-one really knows exactly how many people the smugglers cram onto their vessels.

Migrants are prepared to risk the crossing for the lure of a better life

What is clear, however, is that anyone choosing to try to get Europe on an illegal vessel is risking his or her life.

"Unfortunately it is something we see over and over again," said Jean-Philippe Chauzy of the International Organisation for Migration. "The total disrespect for the safety and dignity of those people."

"They are crammed below deck, the boats are filled three or four times above their capacity, they have no navigation equipment, no safety equipment.

"So, when the boats capsize there are obviously no lifejackets, no dinghies, because everything has been stripped from the boats to get as many people on board as possible."

UN aid agencies believe the strict asylum and immigration policies of many western industrialised countries are forcing migrants to turn to smugglers.

The UN refugee agency points out that of those who crossed illegally from Africa to Europe last year, a majority applied for asylum, and more than half of those were found to be in need of protection.

This proves, the agency says, that a significant number had legitimate reasons to come to Europe and should not have been forced to take the illegal smuggling route.

Growing fears

At the same time, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) says that despite the current global financial crisis, falling birth rates across western Europe will cause a labour shortage over the next few years

It says Europe should think about making it easier for people from the developing world to come in and work.

"You have a strong demand for labour particularly in industrialised countries," explained Patrick Taran, a migrant labour spe...t with the ILO.

"They need people to fill the low skilled jobs in agriculture and construction, manufacturing, domestic work, in health care, and you have a lot of people, including with skills, who need those jobs and are willing to come for them."

"Those people will take risks if the doors aren't open. They'll go in by the back window if the front door isn't open."

"When there's no job at all at home, when you have a family to feed, you will take risks to make sure that you and your family have food on the table."

So, as G20 countries, the world's richest nations, work on plans to rescue their own economies, the fear among aid agencies is that the solutions they come up with may close the door to legal migrants and refugees even more firmly.

And if that happens, the agencies warn, more people will turn to smugglers, and more will die as a result.

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Vatican to probe Catholic order
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:32:17 PM »

Father Maciel founded the order in 1941

Pope Benedict XVI has ordered a probe into the Legionaries of Christ, after the conservative order revealed its late founder had fathered a child.

The Vatican said a team of priests would carry out the investigation to help the Mexican order to deal with its problems with "truth and transparency".

In February, the order said its founder Marcial Maciel, who died in 2008, had fathered a daughter with a mistress.

The Vatican disciplined Father Maciel in 2006 over sexual abuse allegations.

Father Maciel was banned from exercising his ministry in public and told to retire to a life of prayer and penitence, following allegations that he sexually abused about 30 boys and young men over a period of 30 years.

The priest - who founded the conservative order in 1941 - had always denied any wrongdoing. He died in January 2008 at the age of 87.

Consternation

The investigation into the Legionaries of Christ was announced in a letter by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

The letter said the pontiff had decided to intervene "so that with truth and transparency, in a climate of fraternal and constructive dialogue, you will overcome the present difficulties".

The Vatican said that its investigators would visit all the institutions run by the Legionaries of Christ.

It was not until after Father Maciel's death that his secret life was revealed. In February, the order admitted that he had kept a mistress and fathered a daughter who was now in her 20s.

The disclosure caused consternation among the priests and laymen who are members of his religious congregation. They all take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Father Maciel was close to the late Pope John Paul II.

The Legionaries of Christ order has about 600 priests and 2,500 seminarians, and says it has some 65,000 members around the world.

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Hundreds feared drowned off Libya
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:31:04 PM »
More than 200 African migrants are feared dead after their boat sank off the coast of Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.

The boat carrying around 250 people is reported to have capsized 50km (30 miles) north of the Libyan coast in stormy seas and high winds.

Libyan officials say 21 people are confirmed dead and 23 rescued.

A second boat with around 350 migrants was rescued, an official from the IOM told the Associated Press news agency.

'Quick rescue'

The IOM's Laurence Hart said the rescued boat and all of its passengers were now safely back in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

"Rescue was quick because they were near an oil platform that notified the Libyan coastal guards who quickly rescued the migrants," he said.

The missing boat is believed to be in the same area.

Coastguards are believed to be looking for two other boats, which reportedly left for Italy in recent days.

"This is the typical route for migrants from Libya to Italy," Mr Hart said.
See map of main migrant routes to Europe

Italy is to start joint sea patrols in May with Libya, aimed at stopping the heavy influx of illegal migrants.

Migration statistics for Lampedusa and Canary Islands
6,800 Tunisians, 6,000 Nigerians and 4,000 Somalis arrived in Lampedusa in 2008.
In 2007, by contrast, only 1,000 Tunisians were recorded arriving on the island, with even fewer Nigerians and Somalis.
The change could be attributed to increased Spanish efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants entering the Canary Islands.
Migrants from some African countries may have changed their approach as a result, choosing to focus on Lampedusa.
Source: IOM

According to IOM figures, more than 31,000 people crossed from North Africa to the Italian island of Lampedusa in 2008 alone.

The UN's refugee agency reports that two boats, carrying more than 450 people, have arrived in Italy in the past week.

Mother and son

Libyan media report that among the dead was an African woman found lifelessly clutching an infant to her bosom, says the BBC's Rana Jawad in Tripoli.

The missing vessel reportedly ran into difficulty shortly after setting off on Sunday from Sidi Bilal, near Tripoli.

"Libyan search and rescue operations led to the recovery of the bodies of those who drowned as a result of the accident, among them the bodies of 10 Egyptians," said Egyptian official Ahmed Rizk.

The nationalities of the migrants are reported to have included Egyptians, Tunisians and Palestinians.

High risk

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres expressed his "great sorrow" at the loss of life.

He said it was the latest tragic example of "a global phenomenon in which desperate people take desperate measures to escape conflict, persecution and poverty in search of a better life".

Hundreds of migrants have died in the last few months crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa to Europe, and the Gulf of Aden from Somalia to Yemen.

They are at the mercy of unscrupulous smugglers, unseaworthy vessels and the elements but many take these risks for the lure of a better life.

The smuggling season normally stops in October, and resumes again in April.

But the IOM says there has been no lull this year and the smuggling boats have been sailing right through the winter.

GENERAL DISCUSSION / Obama arrives in UK ahead of G20
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:28:55 PM »
US President Barack Obama has arrived in the UK for his first major foreign trip since taking office in January.

Mr Obama's first stop is London where he is to attend the G20 summit hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The two will have breakfast talks in Downing Street on Wednesday followed by meetings with other world leaders.

Much is riding on the trip, says BBC North America editor Justin Webb, as the US is seen by other nations as the catalyst for global economic recovery.

Our correspondent added that although the US regards Gordon Brown as a key player in efforts to secure a lasting agreement at the G20, most of the focus would still be on the president's role.

Busy schedule

President Obama was met at Stansted Airport, north of London, by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and a senior official from the US Embassy.

He then boarded the presidential helicopter Marine One to make the short journey to central London where he will stay at the US ambassador's residence.

Before the start of the G20 summit of world leaders on Thursday, Mr Obama will hold extensive talks with Gordon Brown, meet the UK opposition leader David Cameron and have a private audience with the Queen.

The president is also scheduled to hold bi-lateral meetings with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.

OBAMA'S EUROPEAN TRIP
Tuesday: Arrives in London
Wednesday: Mr and Mrs Obama breakfast with the Browns at 10 Downing Street; Mr Obama holds talks with Gordon Brown; meets Russian and Chinese presidents, David Cameron, and the Queen
Thursday: G20 summit; Mr Obama will also meet the Indian PM, the South Korean president and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia during the day
Friday: Departs for Strasbourg; meets French president; holds town-hall meeting; visits German Chancellor in Baden-Baden, returns to Strasbourg
Saturday: Attends Nato summit in Strasbourg; departs for Prague
Sunday: Attends EU-US summit, departs for Ankara
Monday: Departs Ankara for US

Justin Webb: Back in the UK

The president's wife, Michelle Obama, will take part in a series of engagements with Sarah Brown, the prime minister's wife.

Mr Brown is keen for world leaders to reach agreement on a new set of rules for regulating global finance as well as measures to boost economic demand and support poorer countries.

According to UK officials, the prime minister spoke to the president on the phone during his flight to "identify outstanding remaining issues" ahead of the gathering of world leaders.

The call was an "opportunity for both of them to take stock of where we were," a No 10 spokesman said.

Our correspondent says President Obama will assert that the US has changed, that America is willing to listen and engage, but he will also insist that America still has the capacity to pull the world in the right direction.

A White House spokesman stressed the president would "listen in London as well as lead".

Speaking earlier at a gathering of religious leaders at St Paul's Cathedral, Mr Brown called for the "values that we celebrate in everyday life" to be brought to the financial markets.

But with two days to go before the London summit, further splits are emerging on how to tackle the economic crisis.

The French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, told the BBC that France would walk away from any agreement if the US and the UK were not prepared to accept a stronger financial regulator.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chanellor Angela Merkel are planning a joint press conference on Wednesday, fuelling speculation of a united front against UK and US calls for a further co-ordinated fiscal stimulus.

But German finance minister Peer Steinbruck told the BBC's Newsnight programme that it was unlikely anyone would walk out of the meeting and it was "highly probable" that an agreement would be reach on enhanced financial regulation.

Summit countdown

G20 countries have been divided over the size of their respective packages to boost economic demand and what further action may be needed.

G20 LONDON SUMMIT
World leaders will meet later this week in London to discuss measures to tackle the downturn. See our in-depth guide to the G20 summit.
The G20 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the US and the EU.

Q&A: G20 Summit
Have Your Say: Global Reform

Some European leaders have argued that the economic crisis began in the US, and that America's stimulus package should therefore be more robust than other nations.

"This crisis started in the United States," said Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker last week.

"The Anglo-Saxon world has always refused to add the dose of regulation which financial markets, the international financial system needed," he added.

There are signs of agreement on other issues, however.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is reported to have said that chances were high that deals - for example, to regulate hedge funds - would be reached.

On Friday, Mr Obama will travel to Strasbourg, France, where he will hold talks with French President Nicholas Sarkozy, and stage a "town hall"-style meeting, before heading over the border to Baden-Baden in Germany for a meeting with Ms Merkel.

He will also attend the Nato summit on Saturday in Strasbourg, where talks are expected to focus on the ongoing military operations in Afghanistan.

Mr Obama will then head off to the Czech Republic to attend the EU-US summit, before travelling on to the Turkish capital, Ankara.

It will be Mr Obama's first trip to an Islamic country since he entered the White House.

NEWS / ?Female inmates subject lady to three days of gruelling rape ?
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:35:22 PM »
Kirikiri Prisons is actually the centre of attraction when you talk about prison services in Nigeria. It used to host the cream of the inmates and prisoners, some of whom at last ended as executed convicts, especially when Lagos was the federal capital of the nation.

Today, there is another reputation or disrepute that has taken over the prominent and dreaded prisons yards in the heart of Lagos. Homosexuals ? lesbians and sodomists are on rampage now in the prisons to an alarming level. They are ready at any given opportunity to pounce on mostly new inmates whose skins still look good and healthy.

On a day Saturday Sun intentionally ran into the trap of people who catch pedestrians that cross the expressway at the Orile bus stop, the issue developed into some other angles not earlier anticipated. That angle was the blowing of the scandal of homosexuality ravaging the prisons and championed by sex-starved hardened inmates who would prefer to compound their problems.

As Saturday Sun Reporter ran into the waiting hands of the people who make money from pedestrians that cross the road near the bridge, there arose a lot of drama at the waiting room as the captors kept coming to intimidate them to drop money and buy their freedom. The blackmail was ? if you don?t pay and leave here, we will soon send you to Kirikiri, and today is Friday, so before your people come to bail you on Monday, a lot must have happened to you in the prison.

When these taunts continued, a lady sitting next to Saturday Sun Reporter opened up and narrated amid tears what she witnessed sometime when she was caught in the same act and taken to Kirikiri. It also happened to a man who was also there who opened up on the ordeal.

Victims? ugly tales
The offence of this lady in her twenties on the fateful day was being caught outside during the monthly environmental sanitation day. Today, (Linda )not the real name she gave is still in the shock of the horrible experience she went through in Kirikiri prison. She was one of those arrested by the task force at Orile for daring to walk across the road instead of using the pedestrian bridge. And when the blackmail of being sent to Kirikiri to stay over the weekend was mentioned, she screamed and vowed to borrow to ?settle? the captors so long as that would save her the agony of being taken to prison. The panic she displayed made the reporter ask further why she was so scared of Kirikiri, and the lady told her story not knowing she was talking with a journalist at work.

She was already in tears when Saturday Sun asked what her problem was as every other person still looked calm. ?You won?t understand, she sobbed. A little crowd of concerned women gathered to know what could make her so sad and she started talking?

According to Linda, about six months ago, she was arrested by a Task Force for stepping out on an environmental day. ?They took us to Alausa where, we were detained and later taken to Kirikiri. Since it was a Saturday there was no court in session. Unfortunately, for Linda she was not with a kobo or her phone, so there was no way to trace her whereabouts.

?We were moved into a cell where we were to stay till Monday before we would be arraigned and probably bailed. We were welcomed by the inmates cheerfully when one lady rushed at me and asked me to remove all my clothes.?

Scared stiff, she removed all as the lady raved that she needed the clothes while she can keep her dirty singlet and pants. ?Your matter is a bailable offence; therefore you can always get another.?
Linda thought that was all, unknown to her another woman was at the end of the hall salivating at her skin and --- that were glowing. She sent for her. The lady received the shock of her life when the woman started squeezing her ---s. She tried to shout but was pushed to a corner and her mouth tied. She was warned that if she wanted to leave the prison alive she should just comply as her attacker was in jail for life and would not lose any sleep if a judge adds another year to her term. With tears she succumbed while the desperate, sex-starved lady ravaged her.
?The escapade went on and on till Monday when my parents finally came and brought me out after parting with N50,000.

?Even if they want me to give them N100,000, I would do that so long as I do not find myself in that prison again.

Her case was the same with another male victim (names withheld) whose tear had to be sewn by doctors after he was gang-raped by male inmates in the same Kirikiri Prisons. He was taken there over a minor offence as well, to his surprise, his landing in the cell was like a good dinner to the chief inmates who literally tore him apart for rounds of bizarre sex. The men ravaged him sexually and left him badly battered and bruised after rounds of sex at the rear. He was seriously wounded.

We don?t condone it
Saturday Sun sought to know if the authorities of the prison are aware that such unthinkable acts are perpetrated in their domain by inmates and convicts. The prison Public Relations Officer told Saturday Sun on phone that the authorities do not condone such activities but would deal decisively with any one found guilty of such allegation.

He said: ?We do not encourage homosexuality or lesbianism in our prisons. If the victim had reported such incident we would have dealt with such inmate. If she can still remember their faces, let she come up in confidence and such a person would be dealt with accordingly. You cannot overrule the fact that such act could exist considering the fact that it is a prison and those women and men have been secluded. Meanwhile our men are always on the watch to ensure that we take actions to ensure that such things do not happen in the prisons. Asked what would be the punishment for anyone caught in such act, he said: ?We will definitely confine the person to the dark cell till discipline is achieved. The Nigerian prison is a rehab not a place to condone or encourage evil?.

HUMOUR and JOKES / TEXT MESSAGE REBRANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!._ IKENNA EMEWU
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:34:15 PM »
I hear they are re-branding Nigeria. Good project, I must say, if what I heard is right. But which market or village square in Nigeria was the venue or is it going to work through the text messages we keep getting on our phones? What I call it is ambushing. How would someone who wants to change us send us text messages without the opportunity to hear from us as to know the impact the strategy makes? If the campaign is to be effective, we should talk back and say our minds. But the SMS comes in format you can?t send a response to the sender.

So, the best way the citizens? minds would be changed is to bombard them with text messages from anonymous sources. That is wonderful and just one of the wonders of Naija. We will soon see how SMS sent to people?s phones would turn around their lives and attitude towards their fatherland.
So the same SMS will make the foreigner who knows how much our re-brand catalysts (government officials) steal and hide in their banks and buy properties in their lands start to value the green passport?

That is wonderful, I say again. I was told by elders who value the truth that the person your words have most impact on is your friend. That is the reason when a matter is tough and hard to settle, you look for the friends and close associates of the people involved to make them yield. So when did the friendship of the overlords called government and the victims they plunder start to blossom? I would have thought I should befriend the person I want to influence by first treating him well and with respect instead of thinking I am too smart to stampede him into adopting my views about a nation even as an enemy.

It is like the story of a husband and the wife who married in bliss. After the initial intimacy, love falls apart for a reason ? one has developed total disregard and disrespect for the other. A campaigner (re-brander) comes into the family and urges them to call each other wonderful pet names and always demonstrate love that does not exist. Meanwhile, he has not tackled the major issue that caused the love to crash. Will it work?

Someone should please join me and laugh. Yes, it calls for a good and hearty laugh otherwise you will find out that you will weep over this project. You will weep because they map out money for white elephant re-branding when they remove subsidy in fuel prices to avert subsiding fraud. Good logic and good economic strategy. Some arguments I have heard pro-rebrand persons canvass have made me know the reason they recruited that good woman to head Information Ministry. So the trick is to leverage on her fine face, the love Nigerians have for her and her popularity to sell dummies to us when evil thrives in government places. This is the wrong market for such dummies.

It amuses to hear that someone re-orientates a nation, changes the awareness pattern of citizens and champions a new order for a people ? I hope these are synonyms of what they tag ?re-branding? from the street. My colleague asked me in dejection during our argument if I am one of the people that have written Nigeria off and sees her as irredeemable. I answered quickly in the negative. I believe Nigeria is redeemable. I believe Nigeria can be mended and easily too. But I believe also that mending Nigeria has a formula, and not just a haphazard affair.

Before we re-brand Nigeria and get it right, we should first ask where Nigeria started getting bad from. Where is the engine of Nigeria, from which we could mend it and it gets going again? The engine is the leadership. That is where Nigeria collapsed from. That is where mending should start.

When Frank Nweke Jnr. was Information Minister, he flew the same kite. It crashed. This one being hoisted by another in the same stead will suffer bad weather too. I asked Nweke then in an interview what made him think that Nigeria should not be mended from the leadership, instead of junketing all over the place mouthing empty slogans. He avoided the question. I ask Akunyili the same question now.

Why should re-branding of the nation not start with the government and the attitude to things? I will ask Akunyili again, how many propaganda stunts aka re-branding did you stage anywhere as NAFDAC DG for years to achieve the much you did there? Fellow Nigerians, was it re-branding slogans and chants that made Dora the super woman you know, or was it sincere dedication to hard work and service?

When a certain man ruled Enugu State for eight years, he was a re-branding person who placed his ebeano.com jingle on CNN just as some irritant kept annoying us as his face appeared every now and then on CNN welcoming people to Nigeria, the heartbeat of Africa. When the Enugu man bombarded CNN viewers in Helsinki, Sapporo, Alaska, Tamale, Windoek and other remote places on the earth with his ebeano slogan, which made no sense to them, the streets of Enugu collapsed and citizens buried in dust emanating therefrom. But another one is there now. He does not believe in empty re-branding sloganeering, but the streets of Enugu have been fixed. So which of the two has made more impact?

How many stunts have Babatunde Fashola posted to etch the consciousness of his devotion to leadership in Lagosians? The bridges he builds, the roads he fixes, the mess he clears, the disenchantment he re-orders, the order he reinstates are all enough sloganeering. It does not take propaganda to build a city. It does not take re-branding and the creation of slogans and campaign motifs to change a people. It takes leadership. It takes good example. Let the government of Umar Yar?Adua give Nigerians leadership, show them he can do it right and they will all fall in line with him. It takes the resolve to lead to be a leader, not chants in the market place. Any day Yar?Adua provides these, he owns our loyalty and Nigeria will re-brand itself. Dora should not worry about how Nigerians behave now, let she worry about how leadership will change and everybody, everything will fall in the right place.

This amiable and hard working woman should understand that many don?t take her seriously in this project and would start to value the green passport outside this shores when they know that the bearer of the passport, even the diplomatic one, has stolen money from public purse in his luggage. How can other people just start respecting you because of a mere slogan of re-branding when on the same day you staged your re-brand programme the media was awash with theft of public money in billions, and nothing is done.

A nation where a top citizen who also graced Dora?s function glossed over an allegation that his sister inlaw with no known means of livelihood was caught with hundreds of thousands of dollars at the airport when he was governor can?t succeed in any empty re-branding.
It is about two years now Yar?Adua has been in power, nothing has happened to the power sector crisis. Meanwhile, the people Dora plans to reach have no access to television or radio because there is no power supply in their area in the past months.

The reason Nigerians are apathetic to their national identity or behave wrongly is the leadership that is overburdened with misdeeds that it lacks the boldness to instill order on the masses. Another reason Nigerians are ?bad? is government policy ?the same reasons that made African Americans crime-prone, and Black South Africans dissidents. It is a leadership crisis.

When you give people leadership, they naturally reciprocate with a change in attitude to their country. There is no nation where the citizens have what they need from government where the morale is low regarding patriotism. We all love Nigeria, but there is a social contract that is supposed to exist, if the leadership fails in its part, it automatically follows that the led will revolt and hate the nation. That citizen whose child?s education is assured (not free education), his amenities are fixed, security guaranteed, job secured, opportunities await, especially a country like Nigeria that is created not to live in want will naturally behave honourably. But when these are lacking, any propaganda on re-branding is like what Karl Marx said that it is futile to enact laws to scare people from stealing food when food has not been provided them.

Let us tell ourselves the basic truth that it is the elite ?leadership that champions positive change and also negative change, like in the case of Nigeria. The masses naturally follow in the trend. The elite, no matter how small remains the steering of the society to any direction it wants.

It is only in a revolution that change emanates from the streets where the middle class call out the proletariat for social upheaval. Apart from that, leadership dictates the pace of change, and not from the masses but from among itself. The most potent change Akunyili can champion will begin with the team Yar?Adua selected to lead the nation. Deliver leadership. When we see there is a difference, we will join. But if they don?t change and want us to change through sloganeering, it is a farce.

The common man cannot hear any slogan of re-branding if the hospital he runs to gives him no attention over his dying child. Dora is in fact laying a foundation on nothing. I would be terribly disappointed if she is honest with the project. And I insist that zeal is not all. Indeed, zeal without knowledge is like a runaway horse.

NEWS / ?Our computers know the owner, keep his secret?
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:29:50 PM »

There are still a lot you are yet to hear about the invention of computers and the improvements every brand brings.
Everyone knows the things a computer could do, but it might beat your imagination that just few years after a Nigerian actress rammed herself in a mess over someone accessing her laptop and throwing to the public sleazy photos from there that later hit the newsstands, computer manufacturers have come up with what should have saved her the embarrassment.

Say it loud and clear that there is today a computer in the Nigerian market that knows the owner and only gets activated when the owner speaks to it in a peculiar language.

Have no doubts about it until you have visited the Mountain Computers located in Lagos and Abuja. Maybe it is possible in the years to come computers will turn to house helps and run your errands or even drive your cars while you have some rest.

The MD of Mountain Computers narrated to Saturday Sun how computers marketed by and made for the firm can only get activated when it sees or senses the owner. Without this, there is no magic that can boot the computer, not to talk of accessing the data within it.

Computer with brains
You might see that your computer or laptop has deficiency already if it does not know you or respond to your call. Mountain Computers markets two forms of the machines with brains. One is a tabletop with a flatron LCD-like frame in black and red colours.

The computer uses keyboard as an option. It has a sensitive screen that responds to touch and gets activated. With the sensitive screen activated, you don?t need a keyboard to operate it. it also has inbuilt CPU. You simply use your fingers on the screen where a soft format keyboard appears, touch the keys you want like a touch-sensitive handset and your work gets done.

It is a very flexible process that makes its use quite easier. Better still, the computer can keep your secret as you work. While still on, you can touch a button and the LCD (screen) goes blank while the computer is still on. It is a deal for secretive users who would not want the other person to see what they are doing. As the computer screen blanks off, you get it back on by touching the same key when convenient.

It gets to know the owner by simply imprinting the owner?s fingerprint on the system. Immediately the computer scans and internalizes your fingerprints, only the same inputted fingerprints boots the computer. Unless your fingerprint is pressed on the tiny laser screen, the computer will never come on. A demonstration of the process convinced Saturday Sun.

Work meets leisure
Another distinguishing possibility with Mountain brand of computers from Hong Kong is the ability of the computer to share the screen into two. The MD of Mountain Computers, Monigod Ciri, a Nigerian, explained that while one half of the screen remains the computer you work with, the other half switches into TV reception which enables you to view TV programmes and work at the same time. The computers with TV components are already celebrated at the Sheraton galleria in Lagos where it is in use.

?These brand of computers are built with the best of technology and we sell then out with three years warranty. Since we commenced the marketing, no buyer ever came back for complaint because the products are perfect. We made them understand that spare parts of the computers are available with us, and those that use them have always counted on our reliable after sales servicing no matter where the product is used in the country.

In addition, the computers have fitted web camera, still camera, video and other good features that can even aid even an investigator to get information while working with the system.

Unique collection
The MD informed that desktop computer actually goes with the brand name ? Mountain while the laptop is branded ? Ciri, after the name of the CEO. Laptops come in flashy colours and in 12-inch and 16-inch frames while the company will soon roll out 10-inch and 7-inch packs ? a size of laptop that can easily fit into a jean pocket.

?Already, Nigerians, especially the corporate outfits have embraced the advantages of the computers. First Bank, Zenith Bank, Sheraton, Pampers School, National Copyright Commission, Nasarawa State University and some state governments have used the products for years. Right now, what we are pursuing is to popularize it in schools where the pupils would be required to make payment in instalments as little addition to their fees every term.

We have schools that already buy the proposal and we intend to get more. We also handed out some pink Ciri laptops at the Colliseum in Ikeja during Valentine?s Day raffle draws.
?Because these gadgets are specifically made for us in Hong Kong, we are assured of the quality and gives close monitoring of what we identify with in the Nigerian market. Moreover, we believe that the Nigerian consumer deserves the best the ICT technology can afford now, that is why we have marketed the product for five years without any fear. There is no need associating with fake brands only to suffer and extort our people?.
