Title: IGBO AND THE OSU TRADITION (ARE YOU AN "OSU"?)

The story of Nigeria's 'untouchables'

By Andrew Walker
BBC News, Enugu, Nigeria

Pastor Cosmos Aneke Chiedozie is about to make an admission that virtually no Nigerian like him would be prepared to make.

"My grandfather was an Osu," he says.

He is standing outside his church in Enugu, south-eastern Nigeria, clutching his Bible which he believes has saved him from being a marked man.

Among the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria the Osu are outcasts, the equivalent of being an "untouchable".

Years ago he and his family would be shunned by society, banished from communal land, banned from village life and refused the right to marry anyone not from an Osu family.

Marriage

The vehemence of the tradition has weakened over the last 50 years.
Nowadays the only trouble the Osu encounter is when they try and get married.

But the fear of social stigma is still strong - to the point that most would never admit to being an Osu.

They fear the consequences for their families in generations to come or at the hands of people who still believe in the old ways.

It took the BBC a long time track down an Osu willing to talk, Igbo journalists, human rights advocates, academics and politicians could suggest no-one.

It was only by chance that Cosmos admitted his family were Osu after an interview with the Pentecostal church - known to oppose the tradition.

Now a born-again Christian, he has had a hard fight to escape the stigma of the Osu.

Sacrifice

People say the Osu are the descendants of people sacrificed to the gods, hundreds of years ago.

Title: Re: IGBO AND THE OSU TRADITION (ARE YOU AN "OSU"?)
Post by: beibee on April 07, 2009, 04:22:21 PM
But an academic who has researched Igbo traditions says he believes the Osu were actually a kind of "living sacrifice" to the gods from the community.

"I remember when I was a child, seeing the Osu and running away," says Professor Ben Obumselu, former vice-president of the influential Igbo organisation Ohaneze Ndi Igbo.

"They were banned from all forms of civil society; they had no land, lived in the shrine of the gods, and if they could, would farm the land next to the road."

"It was believed that they had been dedicated to the gods, that they belonged to them, rather then the world of the human," he said.

Nigeria's growing cities began to break down such traditions of village life, he says.

"If someone lives in Lagos these days, the only time a person may come into contact with it is when they are planning to get married. They go home to tell their families, their parents turn around and say, 'No you can't marry because they're Osu.'"

Initiated

Cosmos' father had denounced the traditional beliefs that made him an outcast from society.

He raised Cosmos to be a Christian too, hoping the bloodline of the Osu would be broken.

But when Cosmos was a child his grandfather died and at around the same time Cosmos fell sick.

"The village said the reason I was ill was I was being possessed by the spirit of my grandfather, and he was angry that we had rejected the old ways," he said.

The village elders put pressure on his father to initiate Cosmos into the old traditions and culture.

It was either that, or he would die, they said.

So he left church, learnt about the spirits and his status in the village.

Outlaw

But this ostracism, he now believes, left him without "moral direction".

He became an itinerant smuggler and outlaw, bringing in goods illegally over Nigeria's northern border from Niger.

Eventually he was arrested and thrown in jail.

"It was in the prison yard that I was born again," he said.

"When I believed in the old ways, I could not marry or be part of my community," he said.

"Now I've been born again, I have rejected all that, and my wife, she is born again too, and doesn't care about it either."

His wife's family had also rejected the traditions of the Osu and did not object to their daughter's choice of husband.

Education advantage

Other Osu have been able to use the ostracism to their advantage, says Mr Obumselu.

Unable to make a way in village life, some Osu embraced "Western" education and became Nigeria's first doctors and lawyers, he says.

Consequently many of modern Igboland's prominent families are Osu.

So why does the stigma remain?

Mr Obumselu says the traditions have a lingering hold on people because they are not sure how much power the "old ways" still have.

Traditionally the Osu are treated as a people apart, but were never the victims of violence.

But today some community conflicts have erupted between people each accusing the other of being Osu, Mr Obumselu says.

"The continued belief in ritual avoidance has caused great harm to society, especially in Enugu."

Pentecostal churches, like Mr Chiedozie's, are having an effect and a growing population may also drown out the stigma of being Osu, says Mr Obumselu.

"After all, if in 1800 there might only be a handful of Osu in any place, in 2000 it may be a third of the village!"

the real issue isn't in denying it; or calling the "blood of Jesus" upon it...

it's in understanding it and helping folks to live beyond it - my take.

Did anyone Burst ur bubble Mister?Look, only you can free ya mind.
Osu caste system exists if you believe it actually do.I have gone to weddings of so-called free-borns and so-called Osus and till date they are living well.
In some places like Mbano,Awo-omama etc the system is still been praticed but i tell u,gradually it wud go into oblivion.lets see what wud happen in the next 10 years, anyone thinking our children wud have time for such rubbish must be dreaming, there are better things to worry abt.
I still maintain,Osu caste system exists only in the mind of fools.IMO  8)

that's tough! "Osu caste system exists only in the mind of fools."

be a bit balanced; think of those who, incidentally beyond their own control
are born into this system and are made to believe in it...

will you consider as fools those who practise voodooism, witchcraft, etc?

To comapre pratising Voo-doo to Osu is not balanced Beibee and u know it.
No one is forced into pratising that, atleast not an adult but Osu system is a situation where a sect of ppl want to impose their beliefs on another sect.
For someone to wake up and call another person an Outcast is not only mean but it belittles the person called an outcast
Witchcraft is a lilttle bit related to Osu sha.
Still i still maintain that anyone that "calls" another fellow Osu is not fit to grace the earth and shld be stoned to death.that is my Opinion.
If anyone wants to wear his osu crown with pride i have no problem with that,my problem is ppl calling others Osu,that is mean and cruel.

thinking that way is easier...

it's like saying 'negro slaves never existed!"
or that no one's "al-majiri".

in india caste system exists and thrives; so does osu system in eastern nigeria;
believe it or not.

there's difference between reality and idealism.

osu my friends still exists sadly to say.  it still prevents our youths from marrying themselves, getting ahead in life and even from making friends.  am a witness to this.  i cried when i got to know that was the reason for the problem, because i believe its just a useless belief that degrades a person.
lets help eradicate it please.

u belived from ur heart that they exist.  One idea 4 u, remember we were once slaves until Christ said it is finished on the Cross at Calvary.  And remember HE says go ye into the world and multiply.  So,why creat barrier among ur brothers who were freed by the Blood of the lamb. mind u!

my nonnyl, its not really about creating a barrier, the barrier has already been created, what we should be talking about is helping its eradication.  we as the future should make it stand that such traditions and beliefs are not welcome and will not have a place in the coming generations

I know a community in Igbo land where the Osu caste does not exist.  Indeed it is not discussed.  The practice was abolished many years ago, sources say about the late thirties by the people themselves.  There was no external influence that warranted this abolition.

Till date, the former osus intermarry with the freeborns without any eyebrows raised.  Descendants of the Osu clan have become community leaders with Ozo titles.  This community is one of the most successful and developed in Anambra State.  Her citizens are quite prosperous with no less than 15 professors across the globe and countless millionaires.

The name of that community is ORAUKWU.  It is located in Idemili North Area of Anambra State.

BOTTOM LINE: It can be eradicated.  It is a matter of the mind and choice.  People stick to it because it bserves some selfish purpose.

. . .Not just in Oraukwu but in many places now.You know what, the idea of ppl believeing firmly that it exists while at the other hand claiming "we" have to find a way to eradicate it is so hypocritical.
You start with yourself, your mind and belief, believe first its not existing then u wud and can move forward in eradicating it.
@Beibee,your replies is like someone saying headache have no cure yet hes seeking for solution of the headache  forgetting that he has to believe first tha his headache can be cured, then seek for cure.
Well,am not stopping u from believing Osu exists.thats ur opinion.
For me,nothing like OSU.

Okogba, there is one man at Onistha.A musician and bread maker. . .Afam Ogbotogbo by name.He and his generation were once said to be osu's.He sings very well but indigenes dont patronise him.He later went into bread making and at first ppl were not buying cos of his so-called osu status.
Things changed,we the youth resolved not be swimming in the ignorances of our forefathers or the mistakes of our parents,I tell you, today,Afams bread is a household name. His songs are on the lips of every Onitsha Indigene.

first and foremost there is no need for name calling
our ideas/opinion does not make us right/wrong,as we share and learn from each other .where as the man in onitsha is "prosperous" as with anything in my beloved country.People don't care how you made your wealth.
to eradicate or champion a "cause" you need to be around and be involved in what ever cause you are fighting for. It's okay to offer opinions, but  with out actions to back it up forget it .The ''Youths" as we always sing is no different
with no support. Hungry, unemployed and poor youth like me may not be any help in quest to our goal. Does it exist, can it be eradicated is all yesses to the above .It will take you and me and every support we can garner to make it work.Develop ideas, teaching, creating awareness and encouraging one another. To identify solutions you must first acknowledge the problems .
If we don't think there's a problem how then can we find the solutions to it .

Acemo, all am trying to say is this. You don't have to create or join an NGO b4 u can help to bring this funny Osu belief down.Simple and quite easy, believe there is nothing like OSU.If u believe there is nothing like Osu,u wont call anyone Osu regardless of what other ppl might say or do.If you believe there is nothing like Osu,u wont stop ur sis/bro from marrying anyone cos someone says the wud-be in law is an Osu . . .it just goes on and on.
Now for the ppl labelled as Osu,they shld not believe within them that they are one. They shld not still become useless to the society and lazy cos someone called them Osu,work hard, make ur dough and blimey,no one wud remember the Osu story.Afam prospered and broke that barrier cos he first and foremost did not see himself less than anyone,he did not see himself as an osu.
Finally, opinions are like as*h*les, everyman is entitled to his own. :-*

Whether we like or not, the Igbo take this osu thing very serious. I believe it will only fade away when our generation takes over :).

It is sad that it still exist till date, although not in all parts of Igbo land. It is a very strong stigma that will take not just a serious stand but also God's grace to erase. I was told that Osu's are living sacrifices made to the gods. They belong to the gods ,so involvement such as marriages  and blood issues remain forbidden till tomorrow. So God help my generation that believes in love.

It's not a matter of prayer. Take for instance, the majority of the youth today don't really bother themselves about it like our parents do. It's a sign that when our parents do leave the world for us, we wont bother ourselves with such stupid laws again. :)

When one becomes a christian he/she automatically becomes a new creature.  And as christians we dont believe in that because we believe the blood of christ has cleans and redeem all that accept him. Osuu we know its been real for yrs and for some yrs know its no longer shouting unlike before.  but some people still hold on to it, i remember asking my dad 10yrs back if i found a man i love an coincidentally he is an  Osuu and my dad said he will dis-own me if i ever try such

I believe the issue of Osu caste system in Igboland is one issue that has proved stubborn.

For example in my village, there was a time when everyone agreed never to draw a margin between the freeborn and the Osus.

But what happened afterwards?

The freeborn still could not marry the Osus..

How can we really stop this?

Perhaps it would be helpful to examine some specific "traditions"?
I come back to values/principles as being important to pass on.   Traditions are just arbitrary rituals.   But people tend to attach emotional importance to them and then end up defending them even when they conflict with contemporary values.   Perhaps the main sources of this emotion are related to notions of heritage and ownership.   Perhaps this can be connected with evolution whereby one wants to protect the "environment" in which one was born and raised because, by definition, this was a good environment for our genes.

Around the world there is a conflict between an obsessive desire to maintain "purity" of tradition/ethnicity/language/religion and principles of equality and inclusiveness.

Can we really stop the tradition we did not start?
Or do we take because we are Igbos and ostracize the Osu's that we really know was not the cause of their fate.

about N100,000. 00 investment for 10days and get 35% for each.  That is N17,500. 00

interest in 5 times, which is N87,500. 00 interest for 10days in addition to the

initial investment amount of N100,000 making it N187,000 within 10days.

good networking investment that has come to elevate you out from poverty, to

give you opportunity to become who you want to be in life and to help your self

out from your financial problems that you are facing right now, what we are

relay talking about is the investment that will give you a legitimate income not

an investment that will bring you down in life.

In your daily trading, are you playing to your strengths, or are you simply

being an "opportunity seeker"? There is a huge difference between the two and if

you're just an opportunity seeker, then you are leaving yourself open to

frustration and losses.  There are many parallels between trading, business and

gambling, and your ultimate success long-term will be determined by how you

approach any of the three.  Playing to your strengths is critical in all three.

In any of the pursuits, there is competition and you always want to make sure

that you're playing to your strengths and not your weaknesses.  The objective is

winning, that is profiting, and you want every advantage that you can get.

Too often, the opportunity seeker will go after an opportunity just because they

see that there's money to be made, and they figure that they can shore up their

weaknesses (learn more) enough to go get that money.  Let? take a brief look at

how this applies in each area, keeping in mind the parallels between them.  you

can take out time to know more about what we are talking about by visiting our

web site on www. Lenotreasureinvestment. me. pn to get more information on how the

company was initiated and the various investment we undertake to know which one

and how to invest.

Note that the amount stipulated the chart depends on how much you decide to

invest; There is no limit to your earnings, Sometimes it sounds too good to be

true; yes because it is one of the most easy and stresses less ways to make

money.  Daily profit indicator has helped many to achieve much more, and as the

confidence grows stronger we think it can be introduced to others who think they

have the self control to stick to the daily plan.

Hmmm, I think the orrder should have been the other way, i. e.  people ought to have idolised the osu since they are the ones closet to the same gods the indigens of the community serve and revere.  that said, for me I think the osu exists in the minds of sme ppl whose intention is to intimidate and manipulate others, otherwise the osu system is dead and gone

why not check her out.

i do realize that some of us
take others for granted...

we feel this forum is all there is;
we fail to connect with folks we heartily interact with.

folks whom we enjoy their company
we fail to connect with them in the real life.

we must realize: life's beyond the cyber space.
the cyber life remains a mirage
unless we connect with folks in the actual life

let's all think about it.

I understand that my family was osu.   I know that people that may be osu may want to stop this discrimination, and I agree with you all.   There is something as Christians that we must also acknowledge.   Those gods that our ancestors were dedicated to were very wicked and continue to be very wicked to date.   I think what we need to concentrate on regardless of the ostracization is to actually find out how to denounce, disvow, these gods.   I understand that this initiation is reversible.   Does anybody know about this reversible rituals?  What is required?  Where are the places that does this initiation reversals?  Please give me names of people that I can contact to have my family initiations reversed.

I am a Christian.   I am a pastor, but I will honestly like to step forward and disengage myself from these evil and wicked deity.   I do not think that any of us should be angry at the free borns that do not want anything to do with us.   If you are spiritual, you should be able to know that these gods still remain with us.   Spiritually, they have claims to us including making us their spirit husbands and spirit wives.   We are saved by Jesus Christ.   We are free from such bondage.   I will like to personally kick those wicked gods to hell myself by speaking it in whatever way our customs has designed.

I want to kick satan to hell!  Where do I go to get this initiation reversal?  This should be our quest.   When you know God, it becomes quite clear what we got initiated into and we need to openly disvow such deity gods.   They are wicked.   I have seen them, and nobody deserves to be saddled with them if they do not want them.   We cast them out as Christian, but we should also follow the culture in casting out the initiation the way that our ancestors were initiated in the first place.   If we do not heed these warnings, our children will continue to suffer because these gods still have claim on us.   We cannot serve two masters.

I do not know if anybody understand what I am talking about.   I need your help if you understand.   Thanks.
