Polio: A’Ibom NMA Calls For Enhanced Immunisation
« on: August 17, 2016, 12:45:19 PM »
The Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State chapter, has asked the Federal Government to intensify routine immunisation campaigns across the country following the resurgence of Wild Polio Virus.

The association state chairman, Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, said in Uyo on Monday that it was important for states  to safeguard their territories by strengthening immunisation campaigns.

He appealed to the state government sand council areas, ministries of health, health care workers, traditional and religious leaders and other stakeholders, to ensure immunisation of children from zero age to five years.

He suggested that the children should be given all the recommended doses of oral polio vaccine as well as the injectable polio vaccine.

Uwah said,“We appeal to the Akwa Ibom State Government, ministry of health, healthcare workers, traditional and religious leaders and parents to ensure that children from age zero to five years are immunised appropriately.

“Akwa Ibom must guard its territory so that it does not import this virus from states where there is an outbreak, including the neighboring ones,” he said.

Nigeria, which had been removed from the list of polio-endemic countries and was waiting to be certified polio-free by next year, recorded two new cases last week.
