The presence of some men of suspicious behaviour on Sunday caused a scare at Wuse Zone II area of Abuja.

Many residents of the Federal Capital Territory sent text messages to friends and relatives, warning them to steer clear of the area. The men, who were noticed around 7.30pm.,were said to be carrying slightly concealed daggers and moving around the area, which also houses a major bus terminal.

But the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Yemi Ajayi, said there was nothing to worry about. He also described the report as ‘mere rumours,’ adding that he received a similar report.

Ajayi said he had contacted the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area, who informed him that there were no such persons in the vicinity.

“I just spoke with the DPO and he said there was nothing like that. Abuja residents should go on with their lives, there is nothing to worry about,” he assured.

Only last week, similar scare text messages were circulated in Abuja, advising residents not to buy fruits and foodstuffs from sellers from a particular section of the country. The text messages said the sellers were planning to poison their wares, in retaliation for the alleged killings of their kinsmen in the Jos crisis.
