Mercedes Cabriolet Eyes More Convertible Lovers

mercedes-cabrioletMercede Benz looks set to lead the campaign to win more convertible converts with its 2017 C-Class Cabriolet recently unveiled at the Geneva auto show.

The Cabriolet was a major attraction for visitors to the pavillion of the luxury automaker at last year’s Frankfurt motor show in Germany, apart from the concept car, where Mercedes Benz had on display over 50 iconic models.

Coming in three variants – C300, C63 AMG and C63 AMG S, the new soft-top C-Class has been described by auto reviewers as a revelation of luxury and sportiness, a proof of its elegant design.

According to a popular online auto journal, Car and Driver, the all-new C-Class Cabriolet is the latest in the company’s string of handsome designs, which may be among the most attractive vehicles on the star-studded floor at the 2016 global auto shows.

The C-Class Cabriolet is one more reason that for Mercedes-Benz form does not just meet function; it engages in a passionate relationship.

“The C-class cabriolet aims to be a year-round convertible, and its owners will be able to lower the top well into the brisk part of the calendar, thanks to the standard Airscarf system, which blows warm air from the front headrests to keep your neck toasty.

“This C also will offer Mercedes’ goofy-looking but effective Aircap wind deflector, which rises from the upper edge of the windshield frame to discourage turbulent and/or cool air from entering the cabin when the top is down,” says Car and Driver.

Engine performance

Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch the C Cabrio in two forms in some parts of the world including the United States: the C300, with a 241-hp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, and the AMG C43, with a 362-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6. Both engines funnel their output through a nine-speed automatic, according to autoblog.com.

While the C300 will be available with rear- or 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the all four wheels will be powered in every C43.

The automaker says the all-new 2017 C-Class Cabriolet comes equipped with a refreshingly responsive 241-hp turbocharged engine and invigorated by a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and sporty paddle shifters.

The firm says the AMG C63 Cabriolet is powered by a pulse-racing handcrafted AMG V8 biturbo engine—the only eight-cylinder offered in the segment—delivering 469 hp (C63) or 503 hp (C63 S), while the AMG C43 Cabriolet offers an AMG-enhanced 362-hp V6 biturbo engine.

Exterior

Most reviewers are unanimous in their assessement of the exterior look of the C-Class convertible – an elegant exterior with sharp creases.

The convertible also has a classic coupe look with the roof up, thanks to the high beltline, steep windshield and long hood.

Power is said to be communicated through the large intakes on the grille and below headlamps that push back into the fenders.

The AMG models add carbon-fibre trim on the trunk as well as a subtle spoiler. The 17/ 18/ 19-inch wheels fill the wells and give the convertible a planted stance. Even with the cloth top up, the cars look stunning.

Interior

The convertible is fitted with a multilayer softtop, so says autolog.com in its review of the new luxury rise. This, it adds, is expected to offer high levels of refinement when it is raised.

Its interior space is similar to that of the coupe, but there is more headroom in the convertible version, it notes.

Autoblog says, “There is also a simple elegance to the interior design. Most surfaces are covered with French-stitched leather; the high centre console uses real carbon fibre on the AMG models and a dark wood grain, which I preferred, in the C300. The floating touchscreen at the top of the dash looks elegant but provides that practical advantage of keeping your eyes closer to the road.
