September 5, 2012 by Rasheed Bisiriyu

Kia is fast catching up with the best of automobiles. It is already overtaking some other ones.

The representative of the brand in Nigeria, Dana Motors, is confident of this and it is ready to display it. It was no surprise on Saturday when the dealership lined up different models of the Korean-made vehicles for a test drive by auto journalists in Lagos.

The event was held at Lekki and it involved virtually all segments from the city car – Picanto and the sport utility vehicles such as Mohave, Sportage and Sorento.

The latest of the Kia siblings, Cadenza and Mohave as well as the ‘cash-cow’, 2012 Rio, stood out among the lots.

Kia Mohave is a luxury sport-utility vehicle.

It is called Borrego in the North American market. Some auto reviewers, including an online news magazine, automiddleast, describe the vehicle as a desert stormer, perhaps from the origin of the name. The Kia Borrego is named after the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.

It says the Mohave is named after Kia’s rigorous testing ground in the US desert, which intrudes on four states and has Las Vegas as a glittering oasis in its centre.

Another reviewer, says Mohave has earned five stars in crash tests by the National Department of Transport and Traffic Safety Administration in the US that shows how much the Mohave is a safe car.

The Mohave is a large SUV, which has its own personality and style that was introduced to the Brazilians at the last Motor Show in Sao Paulo.

It is a complete car and has all the equipment that a car of this category should have besides having a finish superior to its competitors and an excellent design.

The Kia Mohave which was released in March 2010 and has a 3.8L V6 petrol engine that develops 275 horsepower and features by automatic transmission with five gears.

In April 2010 it launched the Mohave 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel with 250 horsepower and six-speed automatic transmission.

The Kia Borrego is a car that has all the latest in terms of automotive technology, simply complete, has provided safety items like air bags, a camera car used to see everything behind when parking.

The Kia Borrego is able to carry seven people comfortably; it provides the fuel tank with a capacity of 82 liters and the trunk with a capacity of 350L.

In its review, drivearabia says the Kia Mohave is expected to strengthen Kia’s “family” SUV line-up and brand image in the world market.

With a 3.8-litre V6 engine mated with the six-speed automatic transmission, the Kia Mohave is characterised by fully-independent air suspension and its various safety systems, including the ABS brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, stability control, traction control, and front and side airbags.

Furthermore, the Mohave is equipped with Downhill Assist Control, keeping the vehicle’s speed steady while going down straight and strong slopes, while a Hill-Start Assist Control is also available.

It adds that the Mohave comes with a 600W stereo with six-CD changer, seven-seat capability, cloth or leather trim, DVD player, reverse camera and all the usual power accessories.

The Mohave rides on a truck-like body-on-frame platform and comes with four-wheel-drive and low-range gearing, which allows it to be classified as an off-road vehicle by default. is practical in its approach. For instance, it says the Borrego’s exterior design is relatively clean and no-nonsense (you could say anonymous as well), with a somewhat low and wide stance that enhanced vehicle stability.

Inside, the overall quality of materials is high, and for the most part, the layout of controls and instrumentation is straightforward and easy to use.

The reviewer also says all trims featured three rows of seating, giving it seven-person capacity, and were relatively easy to stow and put back into place.

In terms of cargo space, it says with the 50/50 third-row seats folded flat, this SUV could swallow up plenty of gear, furniture and family pets.

The Kia Borrego LX came standard with 17-inch wheels, roof rails, rear parking sensors, an integrated tow hitch and a six-speaker audio system with CD/MP3 player, satellite radio, USB port and an auxiliary jack.

The EX trim add items like power front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The V8 versions of those trims add a few extra items. Option packages upgrade the audio system and add features such as leather seating, a rear-seat entertainment system and a navigation system.
