Akpabio blasts NLC on minimum wage
On September 16, 2011

UYO-Akwa Ibom State Government has described as sad the attempt by organised labour to fault the agreement it signed with the government for implementation of N18,000 minimum wage for workers.

Governor Godswill Akpabio stated this while declaring open the ninth Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Rain School and laying of foundation stone for the construction of the permanent site in Uyo.

Represented by his deputy, Mr. Nsima Ekere, the governor noted that it took time and painstaking negotiation to reach the agreement. He wondered why the state labour leader-ship was suddenly turning round to fault the agreement.

Akpabio, who declared that the State Government was resolute on the implementation of the agreement with effect from April 1, 2011, stressed that leadership was a sacred mandate, adding that labour leaders should carry every one along.

The governor said that government took labour as a partner-in-progress and has been collaborating with it by giving incentives to improve welfare of workers to boost productivity.

He enumerated such incentives to include the 13th month’s salary tagged Akpabiomber, provision of vehicles to all the labour unions in the state, 50% rebate on tax to workers, 20% increment in pension for pensioners and N100,000 additional pension to retired permanent secretaries, among others.
