Hope Uzodinma adds one more year

Businessman and politician, Chief Hope Uzodinma, is a year older last Saturday and really has much to thank God for. This is a man who, as the late First Republic Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr. Michael Iheonukara (M.I) Okpara, would say attained nobility by dint of hard work.

Indeed, Chief Uzodinma, may not have a celebrated record of attaining nobility by birth, but by a dint of hard work and persistence, he has walked himself into the hallowed club of noble men of his time. However, his entry into the exclusive league is not without some price. He, in a way, falls into the character mould of the late Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, the presidential candidate of the defunct Great Nigeria Peoples Party (GNPP), who, in the maddening rush for power in the Second Republic, opted for “politics without bitterness” as his guiding principle? Uzodinma, on occasions, had been thrown up by a combination of forces in his Imo State to play the spoiler and in the process hold the state to ransom. On such occasions, however, he had toed the part of wisdom and statesmanship, forgoing predictable personal benefits simply to give peace a chance.

At the inconclusive state PDP primaries of December 2006, for instance, he came a close second to Senator Ifeanyi Araraume. When Araraume fell out with the party hierarchy and was consequently denied the party’s gubernatorial ticket, many had expected Uzodinma to dig in and insist on being the candidate, but knowing that such insistence would further rock the already fractured party, he subsumed his personal interest for the overall interest of the party? Indeed, an intriguing aspect of Uzodinma’s style is that he is not given to publicity.

He once told a select audience that what drives him in taking his actions is what the generality of the people stands to benefit from it and not what he gains or loses at the end of the day.
As he is, therefore, a year older today, Uzodinma has assured that there is no going back on his mission to reposition the politics of the land along the line of issue-oriented dialogue. In a clime where election manipulation, arson and intolerance have gradually but painfully seemed to be the order of political engagement, his mantra of politics without bitterness may offer the badly needed escape valve.
