Athletics: Olowora, Brume Make AJC Team

Olowora-left-will-soon-be-heading-to-South-Africa-612x300Nigeria’s aspiring long distance athlete, Aminat Olowora, is one of the 27 athletes selected by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 11th Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Junior Athletics Championship holding in Pretoria, South Africa from June 27 to 30.

AFN Technical Director, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, stated that the athletes and coaches who were picked after the trials held on Wednesday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State would remain at the High Performance Centre to further their training ahead of the championships.

Olowora already qualified for the African Junior Championships with the time of 4:28.68 during the last National Sports Festival in Lagos where she won three gold medals. The qualifying standard for the championships in the 1,500m for girls is 4:29.00.

Athletes competing in the boys’ 100m include Harry Chibuke, Anthony Egode, Mamusi Mounonuvie and Victor Ikhazoboh. Briggs Tamunotoye and Akere Omezie will participate in the 200m boys while the 400m team comprises Oshasha Samson, Ottah Ugochukwu, Akere Amazie, Adeniji Ademola and Ebelebe Charles.

Peace Ukoh, Deborah Odeyemi, Mariam Bassey, Nkem Ezeala and Morolake Akinwusi completes will compete in the sprints while the 400m girls comprises Rita Ossai, Ekenem Comfort, Ada Benjamin, Abike Egbeniyi and Uwakwe Nkiruka.

Abike Egbiniji is the sole athlete in the 800m girls’ event while Efe Favour will compete in the 100m/400m hurdles. Reigning National Sports Festival champion Ese Brume will participate in the long jump, Nwaneka Okwelogu in shot put/discus and Foustina Oguh in the race walk event.

Veteran Tobias Igwe will lead the coaching crew that also include Daniel Estemobor, Uchenna Emedolu, Maria Usifo, Dr. Oboh, Adebayo Bada and Seigha Porbeni while Ajao Oluwafemi will be Team Secretary.
