Argentina humbles Flying Eagles
Written by Joshua Odeyemi  Monday, 28 May 2012

Nigeria’s U20 Male National team, Flying Eagles were on Sunday defeated by Argentina 1:0 in the ongoing continental tournament in South Africa.

It was the Flying Eagles’ second straight loss in the competition after their opening 3:2 defeat by Ghana.

This leaves their hopes of defending the title they won at the inaugural event two years ago, in tatters.

The South Americans now lead Group A with a maximum six points from their two games – following an opening 3:1 spanking of hosts South Africa – and will tackle Ghana in their final group game on Tuesday.

South Africa got their campaign back on track with a 2:0 win over Ghana today.

Both sides are now level on three points, but the host have a better goal difference.

Meanwhile Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh says the loss was as a result of his players’ inexperience.

“It wasn’t a bad game, but I expected my players to have lifted their game after our loss to Ghana, rather they panicked and were mostly in a hurry,” said coach Obuh.

He added: “All the same, this has given me a better assessment of the team.”

Abuh had earlier complained before departing Abuja, that he would be able to travel with his preferred players as they couldn’t afford a passport.

Slim chance

Notwithstanding the two defeats the Flying Eagles have suffered, they still have a mathematical chance to make it to the next round.

Nigeria must now beat South Africa by a two-goal margin and hope Argentina triumph over Ghana to have a chance of staying in the competition.
