Amnesty: FG reads riot act to detractors
Sunday, October 02, 2011

Hard times await individuals masquerading as officials of the residential Amnesty Office who sell fake/illegal forms to unsuspecting ex-militants of the Niger Delta region with the juicy promise that they would be enlisted in the second phase of the amnesty programme.

Already, plans are afoot to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, who the Federal Government described as detractors and criminal impostors.

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters, Hon Kingsley Kuku gave the warning on Thursday at a grand reception in his honour in Arugbo-Ijaw Kingdom, Ondo State .

“It has come to the notice of the Federal Government that some people are printing forms and cajoling people to buy saying that there is a second phase of the amnesty programme for Niger Delta youths. This is very wrong and the government will decisively deal with such individuals because the first phase of the demobilisation of the amnesty programme has been completed,” he said.

He said the act is nothing short of criminality, adding that the government will not take it lightly with anyone who wants to discredit the gains thus far recorded in the two years of the amnesty programme. He revealed that the restoration of peace in the region, which sprang from the amnesty programme, has raised crude oil production from 700 barrels per day to 2.5 million per day, which has benefited the economy in no small way.

He also said that a book that will be a roadmap for the development of the Niger Delta region would be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan for implementation.
