Police in Delta State have arrested some persons over robbery. Also nabbed were suspected kidnappers.
According to the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, one of the kidnap victims, Jerome Atusiaka, who was suffering from high blood pressure died, after spending three days in the kidnappers’ enclave.
He was allegedly buried in the bush by the kidnappers, who had earlier demanded N10million ransom. Daily Sun was told that the family had already paid the sum of N300,000, to the kidnappers. The suspects were said to have come from Lagos, Onitsha, Agbor and Abuja.
One of them, Augustine Nwabunwanne, told Daily Sun that they were seven in number and that they trailed the victim for several months before he was kidnapped.
He disclosed that they had already shared the N300,000, paid by the family before the victim died and was buried in a shallow grave.
“I got N69,000, while some got N25,000, each. We were arrested by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), through phone calls. It was Tony Ejime, who lives in Agbor that brought the business,” he said.
He gave names of some members of the syndicate as, Goddy Sebastine, Augustine Chinedu.
The CP also narrated how another gang kidnapped 76 years old grandmother, Mrs. Josephine Nwaigbo. According to him, the three- man gang had stormed her residence in Ibusa, in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the State, abducted and kept her in an uncompleted building for some days.
Alkali disclosed that the kidnappers demanded N15million ransom but later accepted to take N500,000.
He revealed that it was in the process of collecting the N500,000, that they were apprehended by the security agents.
The suspects were, Destiny Obogwu, Lucky Okwusonogu and another person, whose name was not confirmed as at press time. Policemen from Ovwan police Division were also said to have intercepted some kidnappers, who allegedly abducted five years old girl. They were intercepted at Aladja junction and the little girl rescued unhurt. The suspects were, Elvis Governor, Eddy Isaac, Felix Governor and Muyiwa Stanley.
The CP explained that other suspects were arrested as they were planning to rob passengers of a bus, while others escaped. Those arrested were, Abubakar Mohammed, Musa Ali and Usman Maidibo.
According to the commissioner of police, all the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were concluded.
